Fuel Door Installation

I didn't feel the need to have yet another Jeep logo so I opted for the plain look. I bought it to keep the junk out. Pricey, but the quality is good. One thing to be careful about is NOT to tighten the aluminum bolts too tight. People have snapped the heads off.

I finally installed the black mopar fuel door, and it looks great! This thread appears to be the real "how to" manual regarding the installation, as the mopar insrtuctions are worthless. I eventually "worked" the two hidden clips loose by wiggling, rotating, and pulling on the housing in a gentle but firm manner. It worked.
There is a plastic piece about the size of half of a toothpick that is seated at the 9 o'clock position which fits into a hole in the sheet metal, preventing the housing from rotating while installed. That piece broke off the original module as I was "working" it out. So obviously it's no big deal, but be sure to be careful when you're inserting the new module into the hole, while making sure the two bottom clips are secured into place BEFORE the top clips. Also be sure to line up the "toothpick" looking piece of plastic into the small hole at the 9 o'clock positiion while lining up the two bottom clips. Snapping it in is fairly easy. Althougha bit pricey, I think it's worth it!

I got the one from Bestop, and it's made specifically for the JK. I mostly didn't want a door that said "Jeep" on it. If people didn't know what I was driving already, I don't think having the name on the fuel door would have helped much.

My first mod. MOPAR fuel Door.
All I can say is,, what a pain. You would think something from MOPAR made for one of there vehicles would fit better. The install is straight forward but it ends there. Getting the old housing off was not to bad, but putting the new housing in for the fuel door was a bear. The two lower clips went on ok. There was no way the upper push clips were going to seat right. I had around a 1/16th of an inch of the upper clips what would not push behind the sheet metal. And this is with the housing’s collar pushed flat to the sheet metal.
To make a long story short I used my grinding tool and I took off around a 1/16th of an inch from the upper push tabs on the housing. Well look at this it fits ,,Hurray, And only after 1.5hrs off getting pissed. I still have a very small gap between the housing and the sheet metal, the thickness of a piece of paper but it’s tight. I’ll wait for some warmer weather and put a small bead of RTV around the top of the housing ware the gap is. No dig deal.

Dumb question maybe so sorry lol
I bought my jeep with this cap installed.
Tomorrow im installing the buchwacker corner guards and i think this cap has to come off first.
Is it a huge pain to get off?? Or maybe just unscrew it and that might be enough to get my corner guards under it?? not sure

sorry to hijack, but i was searching and found this thread so i thought i would ask this here:
can anyone advise if there is a REAL difference in these covers between 2 door and 4 door models? There are different (MOPAR) part numbers but I dont see there would be a difference and haven't read about anyone having issues with buying the wrong ones...................thanks

I think the 4 door version has a small tab/nipple on the back side that's in a slightly different location than the 2 door version. The tab keeps the mounting plate from moving around.
I got the 4 door version for my 2 door Rubi because it cost 30% less (no idea why that was).
I ended up snipping the tab/nipple off and just using a small self taping screw to keep everything in place.

The install was easy enough. It's a little hard to get the inside tabs, but I used a screwdriver to gently push in the tabs.
Took about 40 mins.
I really like the look of having a fuel door again. Even if I need a locking gas cap.

Easy as pie
Just completed this mod with the Mopar door. Took about 20mins and was very little effort. No gaps, no movement, no problems - looks great too - really should come from the factory like this.
