I'm just curious as to how it works.

You are cutting the circuit, to what looks like a sensor located under the center console.

what is this sensor, and what does it do?

So, basically you remove this sensor from the vehicle, and to be safe, the computer shuts off ESP. I get that.

and, reconnected, and restarting the vehicle turns it back on. Great. Because if I use a momentary switch, it's press to kill, restart engine to engage, and if I hide the switch, it's all 007 like!

But, I'd like to know, the sensor we are actually killing. Just the tech guy in me.

Well the sensor is is like a Gyro, it detects lateral movment of the vehicle and engages the RSC, When it feels lateral g-force consistent with sliding or a situation where the vehicle is rolling over it engages. when you disconnect it your dash lights will come on indicating system failures, " which is a good thing". Engaging this mod will effectively turn off Roll Stability Control, traction control, and the antilock brake system. If your on stock Rubicon tires i do not recommend driving with the systems off in the rain, unless your going for that Tokyo Drift approach. hope this helps.

No worries. I'm thinking about it.

I'm very glad my JK has ESP in the rain, my 35 duratracs drive like i'm on slicks!

but it would be fun to play with it a bit more.

I'm assuming it cuts a power wire or ground.

I wonder if pulling a fuse under the hood (or wherever) would have the same effect, and be less 'invasive' on the computer.

 

The sensor is call Dynamics Sensor.

The wires mentioned in the link above are as follows:
The violet/light blue wire is called Dynamics Sensor Supply. (This is the one the write-up author says to cut.)
The violet/dark blue wire is called Dynamics Sensor Ground.

The other two wires are data link wires.

 

Does the ESP OFF factory button not turn the system completely off? I don't know about newer models but my '08 has ESP OFF near the hazards button and that's normally what I use when off road. Do the newer models not have this button?

 

There is a youtube video claiming to pull a J6 (or is it J7?) fuse and it disables the system. I've not pursued it any further than viewing the video.

The button only partially disables it. There's a chart to be found online that describes each stage of it.
