MPG from stock to modified.
I commute 45 minutes to work each day so I watch it closely. Below will be a complete list and log of what has been done and what it has done.
Subject Vehicle: 2008 X(s) Unlimited JK with 6 speed, 3:73 gears
Stage 1.
This was when it was fun to play the I can get more MPG than you game with the wife. TOP MPG ever obtained for over 1 full tank was 24.X mpg. I am sure she could tell you the exact number, she won. That game got old.
Stage 2.
Normal use day in day out. It settled in at 22.3-4 MPG
(still stock)
Stage 3.
The RRC side armor, front RRC XHD, rear XHD. Still in the 21-22 MPG area
( air dam removed )
Stage 4.
RRC light bar (5 - 6"KC's), XRC8 winch, RRC Stinger. 18 MPG
(I about shit here)
Stage 5.
RRC Light bar removed, everything else same. 21.5MPG sometimes up to 22 area but only when going south.
NOTE:this is now at 55K miles and tires are worn so may have a effect from change in "tire/gear ratio". Still has stock tires on it which are 255/70/R17 or real damn close.
I will weigh the stock tire and wheel for reference versus the new wheel and tire combo.
Curent date is 1/30/2011 <------------
Stage 6. (next weekend) will be the following
3.5" RE standard lift
Pro-Comp Shocks w/black boots (I doubt it will matter what color or if they are on or not. )
RC X-Flex arms (All 8 adjustable)
RC Quick disconnects
Stage 7. (After stage 6, 1 week normal driving)
Crager V-5 15X10 wheels
33X12.50X15 Firestone Destination AT tires
Stage 8. ( After 1 week of stage 7 normal driveing)
Teraflex 1" spacer to level the front
Stage 9. ( After 1 week of stage 8 normal driving)
Put stock Airdam back on.
Stage 10. ( After 1 week of stage 9 normal driving)
Replace stupid Airdam with skidplate.
It will be a few of months before this is finished due to some things are in work, but I will keep track and mod slowly for research purposes. Also the RRC light bar will be placed back on in the future to see is it has the same result again. I am hoping to bottom out the MPG around 15-17 and the light bar will have no true effect. I will most likely change gears and other stuff in the future so I will keep this up to date with everything in the future that will truly change MPG.
Hopefully this data will help someone down the line.

Stage 6 made no true change
Stage 7 dropped me to 18.9
Stage 8 has been delayed so far.
Stage 9 was meaningless and only wasted time and beer, if anything it was worse.
I have seen the avg drop as far as 16.5 in hilly areas and to the Save Gulches ride. It was 17.8 or so through the smokey mountains. Right now it is 18.6 after driving around from Gulches last weekend.
Note: I have noticed weight play a big factor in the MPG. I lose about 1 MPG from tools and trail stuff being in the vehicle.
I just put the light bar back on for the week to see what happends to the MPG with it now. If I stay above 17 I will leave it most likely.

RRC light bar & KC's put back on for testing. After three days of my normal commute to work and back I have lost 1.6 or so MPG. It has pretty much hung out at 16.9 to 17 MPG since day one of this week. This is much better than the 3 MPG it cost me prior to other mods. I am guessing eventually you hit a point at which the greater of the mods makes the lesser mod have less true impact.

I'm gonna replay the scenario tomorrow morning but backwards.
I have a 45 min commute that covers 25 miles so it is similar to yours. No real hills here. Weight is just a front bumper with winch and some 31s. Aluminum wheels to replace stock steelies and no excess weight in the rear. I have a flashpak coming to *hopefully* help out. Btw- my guage shows an average of 17mpg but I think it may be closer to 16 in reality based on hand calculations.
Btw- thanks for doing this. It is presenting some fairly static data and seems to be unbiased.

Ya i have a '10 sport lifted with 35's 6 speed and im lucky to get 16 on interstate. Now downtown driving I get around 19-22 i've seen. Guess thats what I get for having a box on wheels driving on interstate. Daily commute 24 miles one way.
