Here is what I ended up doing, let me know what you guys think...

I put the diff cover back on, but since I didn't bother to redo the RTV seal, so it is what it is. I then had a few quarts left of some crappy "Costal" brand 90W gear oil. I filled it up with that.

This obviously isn't oil I will run with, especially since the diff seal is compromised. But, the theory is that some oil in there while sitting has to be better than sitting dry. And i didn't want to waste $40 worth of Mobil 1, but thats whats going back in it next week.

Not sure I'd have put a different weight of gear oil in there, but you should be okay.

If it's just sitting, what the harm? Just try to understand. I'll run out and drain it again if necessary, but this sounded like a good idea.

As far as different weights... I am going to have to completely drain it this weekend and clean it all out with brake cleaner... Wouldn't the crappy oil be a non-issue at this point?

as long as something is covering your diff and gears you will be ok. you wouldn't want dirt, debris or cat hair getting in there

leave it in there to keep the seals moist and the gears lubed to some extent. you aren't driving it so everything is fine

That was my thinking... But clearly I'm no whizz when it comes to mechanics.

Oh... Did you catch that I need to replace my driver's side axle seal... Fun, fun.

No harm... in that respect, oil is oil. What I meant was that the gears will have enough coated on them (especially if it's not being driven) that it wouldn't have needed it in there. But if it's in there now, just leave it as is till you get ready to put the shafts in and just clean it out thoroughly then
