hate to swerve off in a random direction here, but since it's the oklahoma bullshit thread, why not.

I'm using Castrol GTX 5w20 right now and I get some hideous knocking upon start-up when it's been sittin for a while, warmed up or not. Knocking never lasts more than a second, and it sounds like a deep gutteral knock, not a tap.

I really need to get this taken care of.. is 5w20 going to be the death of this engine? Switch oil filters? I think they installed a castrol oil filter on there when I took it in.. it was blistering cold outside, wind was blowing, and I live in an apartment complex, so changing it myself didn't seem like such a good idea.

I've got 34,000 miles on this thing right now and I reeeeally hope I get 34,000 more at least. what would mah fellow oklahomans recommend?

One thing I've noticed is when I park with the nose pointing up (the giant snow mountains here at work), it never makes a sound.. what the hell lol

Yes!

Switching oil filters is the best way to prevent engine knocking on startup after your engine has sat for an extended period of time.

The JK seems less tolerant of poor quality filters than other vehicles. I run Fram in my wife's car without any problems, but my JK HATES Fram filters.

I switched to Mobil 1 filters (and oil) and the start up knock went away.

I have not deviated away from 5W-20, and I wouldn't recommend you do either if you value your warranty.

You should be able to run any 5W-20 oil (synthetic or convectional) without startup knock, provided you buy a good filter.

That's probably the one I'll end up going with - price wise, it's lesser expensive than the others, and well, it's a WARN

Your issue is an oil filter that either doesn't have or has a bad anti-drainback valve. I've tried several different filters - started with Motorcraft (working for a Ford dealership, I can get them pretty cheap), FRAM and a couple of others, and went right back to a Mopar filter. Like Jason said, JKs are extremely picky about what type of oil filter you use. And I'd stick with the recommended 5W20 oil, synthetic is recommended.
