They do a lot of controlled fires in the wildlife refuge area to keep the brushfire down and stuff and when that happens, there be quite some smoke in the area - just looks like fog. I believe the signs you saw was from that.

The signs are there for the fires mentioned above, and random field/wild fires that may break out along the highway. Ive been through it once, basically if you see smoke, they just want you to pull over until it clears up so you dont wreck on the highway since your vision will be impaired.

There are at least 6 different ways to go into the area that I know of. One of the ways to get into there is right off of a major road. When you go back out that way onto the road you can be ticketed for crossing over a curb. That's it. I never go in or out that way so I don't have to worry about it. There is a neighborhood that has an entrance to it that most people use. There are alot of offroad vehicles and four wheelers that live in that neighborhood that four wheel there. There is also a cop that lives there and nobody cares if you go Offroading there. There is a ton of trails with all levels of difficulty and plenty of challenging obstacles. We really should organize a trip there because it is so close to us here in Tulsa and so much fun. The place is huge and you could wheel there all day and still not see it all. I am pretty familiar with the place as I have been wheeling there for over 10 years. Let's just pick a Saturday in 2011 and get as many people as possible and all meet up to do some bad ass wheeling. What do you guys think?

Seems like all the good stuff is closer to Tulsa . These are the times I wish I lived closer up there.

Sounds good... I can't promise I'll be able to make it since I have to work most Saturdays, but I'll definitely try.

Sounds awesome!

Maybe late January or February? Things are a little busy with the holidays and all.

Wichita Mountains is my favorite place in the state. If you ever get back, let me know--I'd love to join you for a hike. Also, don't miss these pages I help maintain with tons of info on the Wichitas ...

From those pages are links to many others with specifics on climbing certain mountains, as well as trip reports and tons of images of the area.

My hats off to you for actually attending class. In college I usually just skipped out unless it was a test day.
