I'm not certain why I think this, but I actually was under the impression that they aren't allowed to retain the credit card numbers anymore--specifically because of examples like the one you cited. That's why all receipts only show the last four or five digits--they don't have the rest of the number. At least someone told me that (perhaps they were wrong?).

I believe you are correct. The party submitting the credit card for payment is given a transaction id number and that number shows on the card. A recipt is generated that ends up showing the last 4 digits that it was paid with. However, if it is a case where you phoned in an order, or even a web order where a human transcribed the info then manually ran the card number, there would be a possibility of someone stealing the card number, expiration date and security code on the back.

The only thing that saved me was that Am Express called me to make sure I had made the purchase because something looked funny because the shipping address was somewhere in California.
American Express is really good about security. I tried to buy something online and they blocked my purchase and called me within 15 minutes to verify it was me trying to make the purchase and not some crook
