Dave from Northridge says that if you put chromolies in them they are as strong as a 44.....thats what I'll be doing soon.

the JK D30 holds up to 35's fine depending on your wheeling style. I have 35's, i wheel every month, but I chose my lines and go for finese instead of stompingo n the pedal. Holds up just fine.

I'm running 35's on my D30. I busted my pass side axle shaft a few weeks ago, but it was my fault (too much skinny pedal). I have the EVO gussets and lower control arm skids, but haven't had a chance to get them welded on yet. I'll be ordering the EVO 44 mags soon, and will have them all put on at the same time.

I replaced the busted axle with a Superior Evolution Series chromoly, and will eventually replace the drivers side with one also.

The EVO 44 mags are an axle sleeve that helps to strenghthen the axle housing outer tubes - they slide into the axle tube, and the axle shft slides into them. This is a very basic explanation, and I know that I am missing a few key "features" - best bet is to check out the EVO website - they offer a more complete list of the features than I do.

Adding the chromoly shafts, EVO gussets and 44 mags to your D30 seem to be the best way to strengthen it. If you really want to, you can add a locker (although I have seen differing opinions on the whole locker thing).

I'm running open diffs, and have never had a vehicle with lockers, so I don't know the difference between having them and not. After busting my axle, I have a new appreciation for picking the right lines, and staying out of the gas - which are probably two of the best pieces of advice that I can offer (based on my own experience).

Hope this helps.

JD

Um....no, simply not true.

Once you go with the aftermarket shafts your weak link now becomes the R&P instead of the shaft. Personally, I would rather break a shaft than a R&P. Much cheaper to replace a shaft than a R&P also.

The stock 30 will hold up to 35s just fine as long as you are smart about it. Like others have stated, easy on the go pedal, good lines.

I have wheeled with a 30 on 35s, then 36s for a long time with alot more power (tho less weight) and haven't had problems, but am smart about it (for the most part). Lotsa skinny pedal on stuff with little traction (sand) but very easy in the rock.

BTW, just found this in another post:

Doing axle upgrades does nothing to fix the main problem of the D30; it's small ring and pinion size. I would agree that the C2 gussets are needed on both the 30 and 44. I think D44's are marginal with 37's so I'd avoid them with a D30. A buddy, who is not abusive, just spun his ring and pinion his D30 and 35" combo. And he has stock axles and an open diff. For some silly reason he wants to do a Super 30 mod to it; which will not correct what broke and the main problem; the small and weak ring gear.

Hope it helps but it also goes to show you some people can get away with it while others just don't have the same luck.
