Well is it possible? yeah, but you better be a master fabricator. With thousands of bucks in specialty tools and a lathe and years of experience. And if your not. Dont expect to get it done on the cheap. It is not cost effective by any means. And what you would have in it would be just as much if not more than a brand new D60 would cost. I may be wrong but I've never actually heard of anyone ever attempting this.... But if it could be done on the cheap I think every one that had a D30 would do it. As a matter of fact that would have been the first upgrade I would have done. The answer is yes but no at the same time.
Oh. Thanks for the info. I'm sure if it was possible cheap everyone would have one lol. You would definitely see a write up on here somewhere.

I have an auto. A lot of the time on the highway I just turn off the OD depending on inclines and how the wind is blowing. I realized many years ago that I am driving a giant box in the wind so I am not to concerned about MPG and speed. I don't have a problem cruising down the highway at 70 or better. OD off I run about 2700rpm doing 70. I wheel with a guy that has 5:13's and 37's and doesn't have any problems.

bump...................i heard the only difference in the d30 and the d44 is the pumpkin and has the same size shafts? I first intended on getting a teraflex 4 inch lift but after i got a d44 i the front. Will a d30 last with a 4 inch lift and 37's if i gusset it, regear to 488s and add sleeves???

the rubicon 44 has a 44 differential and beefier axle shafts - the tubes are the same as a d30 and so are the c's.

a d30 housing will most likely do just fine with just gussets. as far as your axle shafts go, you'll most likley break one of those even if you upgrade to chromoly - that is, if you wheel your jeep.

thanks! I dont really wheel that crazy at the moment bc its a daily driver. I have the gears, and gussets and little cash. I have a guy that will do the install for free. If you were in my shoes would you A. Sell my parts and save up for the D44 or B. Just do the install and beef up the d30, then save for a better lift and add a D44 when the 30 gives out?

how pricey is is replacing an axle shaft?

hmmm, that's a tough one. me, i would just use the money to get a prorock 44. but, if you don't really wheel your jeep too hard and you're willing to leave your front end open, i might just stick with what you're doing and then save up for something like a prorock 44 if you later decide that you do want to play harder.

you can replace your shafts with a set of chromoly's for $599
