5.13 gears initial impressions
I pick mine up from the shop either today or tomorrow. After almost a full year with 3.21s and 35s on my 6 speed, I really can't wait to pick up my JK. Also had them throw in an Aussie locker up front. I'll be sure to post up in here as to whether it was worth the coin. Just reading this thread has already put my mind at ease.
I just won a bet with my wife that allows me to buy the gears! Now that Dave at NR4x4 is having another 5% sale, I think I'll take advantage of the situation. Only problem is that I'm still deployed till Turkey day.
If you haven't done anything to calibrate your speedometer, the computer thinks you are traveling a lot more miles than you actually are. That could lead to some very big poorly calculated fuel mileage discrepancies.
A new carrier should set you back about $50 to $70 dollars, and it shouldn't add anything to the labor cost as they are already pulling your old carrier for the gear install.
my neighbor said 5:13 is too low for a DD that sees offroad only on most weekends but no big wheeling trips just some mud and trails. what do you guys think? he said 4:56 and i thought that was way too high, at least 4:88 is what i have in mind but i really want those 5:13s. thoughts?

5.13s are pretty steep for my standard transmission with 35s. 6th gear at 70MPG puts my RPMS at 2,900ish. I typically don't get my Jeep faster than 70 MPH for that reason, those high RPMs burn through the gas.
If you are running a standard transmission and 35s then your neighbor is correct, 4.88 or 4.56 is a much better fit for highway driving.
