So were you bashing Cooper(Cepek, Thompson) tires?
I run Coopers on my JK and have had Cepeks on my CJ-5. Great performance. great quality and price.

They are pretty quiet, and all I get is a mild humming noise at speed. I've only ever had BFG ATs and these tires, so my experience is limited. These are just slightly louder than the BFG ATs.

Not sure if your buddy has picked some yet or not, but I've been running Hankook Dynapro ATm RF10's in 285/75/R16. Not being the most popular of brands a lot of people never even know this tire exists, but I love em. Great road manners dry/wet/snow, and they treat me beautifully on the trails, and handle in the mud as well as any other AT. Light Truck tire, with a load rating of E, and the sidewall is stout enough to run them on the trails around 12 PSI without too much bulge. About $200 per tire most places.
