Default Best tires for a Daily Driver

I have 46k on my Jeep now, and I will be looking to get new tires in the near future. What are suggestions for tires to be used on the stock 18" rims?

I didn't start with 18" Sahara rims and wheels, but one of the first "upgrades" I did to my stripper X was to by a set from a JK-Forum member who lives nearby. The deal was fair and while the 18" setup was a huge improvement over my stock 16" steel set, when I decided I really wanted to go off road, I soon got a better deal on a set of 17" Rubi Moabs from another local JK-Forum member and drove around on those for quite a while before going to 17x12.50x37" Goodyear Kevlar MT/Rs by using spacers. This is the setup I have today and I like the Rubi rims so much, I forgot all about the AEV wheels I couldn't afford at the time.

The Rubi rims and tires should be available off the lot on all JK models. They were about an inch taller than the Sahara tires, much quieter on the highway and way more capable off road. If I did not end up lifting my JK, I'd still be rolling on a set of stock Rubi treads.

This post really doesn't address your original question directly, but I think you will be better off financially and more satisfied with the choices available to you if you switch rim sizes to 17". Rubi rims and tire takeoffs are a readily available, inexpensive and a great starting point.

I used the stock Duelers on my 18" Sahara rims for three years on my previous Jeep (it was a lease). I just bought a new Sahara and swapped the stock tires for Goodyear Duratracs (32", no lift). I like the more aggressive look and the fact that they're rated very well for snow (I live in Minnesota).

I was concerned about ride and tire noise as my Jeep is used primarily as a DD. So far I'm very satisfied with the ride--it actually rides better but that is probably due more to the fact that the Jeep is brand new and everything is "tighter" than the 3 year-old Jeep I just turned in. They are slightly noisier than the stock tires but it's only a light hum (so far) and I don't mind it at all.

The only caveat to all of this is that I also replaced the stock wheels with 17" AEV Pintlers so I could go with C-load Duratracs instead of E-load. Plenty of people responded to similar questions of my own regarding the latter and said they are just as happy with their E-load Duratracs on the stock 18" rims so I think you would still be happy. I also wanted a wheel with less backspacing so that factored into my decision.

Good luck!
Steve

I love my Goodyear Silent Armors (dumb name, great tire) on my DD. Good ride on dry roads and they perform well in the rain. Their tread is aggressive without being aggro, and the price is fantastic.

Here's a picture of them on my Jeep.

I am a big fan of Cooper tires. I love my Discoverer S/T's they are a pretty agressive all-terrain, they did great with all the snow we got this past winter, have good road manners and also handle the trails pretty well. If you are looking for something a little less agressive I also recommend the Discoverer ATR, my parents have run these on their Santa Fe and Ford Rangers.

Both the S/T and the ATR come in 275/65R18 (32") and 275/70R18 (33") that will work with the stock wheels.

I use my Duratracs and love them. My Dad put nearly 60k miles on his rubi BFGs before switching to BFG AT and he's got about 25000 miles on them and they still look new.

Everyone going to say that their tire is the best, even if it's a mud tire. So here's my I have the Bridgestone Revo 2 tires, it's a great DD tire. I've gone 80 on the hwy. just fine, also real good in the snow, went to NY this past winter and never had it out of 2wd, no need. And if you do go wheelin, it's fine for anything, excluding mud. My is also a 18" wheel Sahara, w/auto.

Before I got my JK, I had a jeep liberty which I took on mild trails and it was my DD. I ahd some General Grabber AT2 tires installed and they were a VERY good all terrain tire that ran very smooth on the road, was awesome in snow and handled light wheeling awesome. Highly recomend them. Here is a link to them on tirerack.

these are not mud tires and will NOT hold up to severe abuse on trail but nothing will that is great for a DD.

If you want the best of both worlds I highly recomend the Goodyear MTRs with kevlar. They run very nice on the street and since I just got them I havent wheeled them yet I cannot comment on off road but there are plenty of reports from members here that they rock off road. this tire runs much nicer than the stock rubi tires.

Depends on your personal preferences of course, but like someone else said you will get the tire that everyone is running, even if it isn't what you need or are looking for.

But here's my
BFG AT KO was what I had on my jeep from day 1 of owning it. Great DD tire, and did OK off road. I have since moved to Goodyear Duratrac, mainly for the more aggressive look, but still because my JK is a DD.

Hope you find what you are looking for.
