I'd go with the smittybilt xrc8 competition series mine came with the synthetic rope hence the "competition" but I'm not sure if they still offer it but the xrc is a great winch for the price I have no complaints

I think the first question is what size winch are you looking to get?

I'm digging my Recon 10.5k with Synth. <$500.
There are some vids out now proving it can do the job.

I got my superwinch epi9.0s for $600 online. It was a top contender in a winch shootout. Synthetic line, waterproof winch, integrated solenoid, and premium manufacturer. I doubt there is another $600 winch you can feel as confident that it will get the job done when you really need it...

Also, I am running mine in a lod midwidth too. The mounting holes are slightly different from warn so I had to spec this winch when I ordered the bumper, or you need drill a few holes yourself if you already have the bumper.

Here's the best pic I have right now:

With the synthetic rope you don't get the splinter barbs from wear and tear like you do the cable an also it doesn't get curl in it like cable does from being wrapped up on the spool and it's easier to handle but I'm definitely no winch expert other then that

Synthetic also doesn't store kinetic energy and snap back if it breaks. It just goes limp and falls to the ground. It also is much lighter in weight, saving 30lbs or more at the bumper. It looks cooler and it floats too...
