On-Board Air System
Downside to this is the converter itself has losses, plus 12 amps @ 110 volts = 110 amps @ 12 volts even in a perfect world. That is worst case of course, but you're taking about a damn big load on your battery all the same. You're much better off getting a motor designed to run at 12vdc.
One possibly solution I've been looking at is getting a replacement winch motor (4.5hp at 12vdc), and adapting a York to it. As far as I can tell, this is exactly what Kilby is selling as his HP3000 electric compressor:

This would be about $120 for the motor and $50 for a junkyard York, plus whatever it might take to connect them together. I'm seriously examining this option

I've decided to go with a Co2 system for now. Cheaper and I don't feel like spedning the time to hunt down parts at salvage and junk yards. If anyone finds everything and puts it all together I'd love to see pics though!
Yeah, I'm waiting to see where people mount their compressors and tanks too. I have the QuickAir II (Portable) with the tank install kit, but I'm not sure where to mount it yet. For the time being, I modified the portable version to use a quick fill gauge (compressor stops when line pressure goes too high). Here's what it looks like:

BTW I have the VIAIR Constant duty on board air kit which has everything thing you need, compressor, tank, all fittings, hoses etc. I have found them online for about $370 shipped
Quick Air 2 or 3 is a good choice. I'm currently using a portable QA 3. I might take it out of the box...hard mount & wire it in the cargo area soon. Power Tanks are amazing. Had one of those in my TJ.
Yes, I have this unit. It was well worth the money (I think I got mine on sale for about $50). I haven't tried it on my new 35's but it would air up a 33" tire from 12lbs to 30lbs in about 2 min. I have heard of others having issues with them. Other than the guage that comes with it doesn't work worth a crap, mine has worked flawlessly!
