Default Bolt On Smittybilt Tire Carrier

I was told to share this info on how the tire carrier that bolts onto the tailgate works. I was very impressed with this tire carrier. I don't think it really adjusts to sit the tire on the bumper. It does have a couple different mounting holes to accommodate a 33" tire, a 35" tire, and a 37" tire. I tried the shorter hole with my 35's, and it hit the bumper. (didn't work). So I had to mount it in the 35" tire hole, and it clears the bumper without touching it.

Those steel arms do take out all the wiggling of the spare tire. The tire tightens down and touches the steel arms in 4 places. No more rubber bumpers. It works very well.

I did install the MBRP tailgate reinforcing kit because I think it is necessary to spread the extra weight around in the tailgate sheetmetal.

I really like this setup, because you only have to open the tailgate (not the spare tire, then the tailgate). Plus the tire sits nice and close to the body, and wiggling is no longer an issue with the spare tire.

The only issue not resolved is the extra weight on the hinges.

I'm not familiar with this one. This bolts to the actual tailgate? Can you please share more info along with a link? Thanks!

http://www.quadratec.com/products/22202_2001_07.htm

It replaces the original tire carrier so you can mount larger and heavier tires. And it's pretty cheap!

How does it account for the different backspacing on wheels? Is there an adjustment for this? I'm kinda interested in this one. Still can't justify $1k+ for a bumper/tire carrier.

I'm not entirely sure since I have stock rims, but there are 2 spacers that push the stop bars out away from the body. If you took those spacers out, it would allow for more tire room. Plus the way the tire actually bolts onto the mount might allow for wider tires. It is a single threaded T handle instead of lugnuts. There seems to be a lot of threads to allow for wider tire and rim combos. I think it would accommodate a wide variety of backspacings.

I just installed this tire carrier and did a write-up with pictures to share...

I'm running BFG's 37" KM tires, and it is well supported. I need some time to confirm long term durability...
