Default Chrome Rails to Black

Jeep came with chrome rails and a gas cap and I want to black them out. What's the best way to do this? I've plasti dipped a bunch of stuff on my Jeep and my Pops but need something to hold up better and would like to do it myself.

What's the best stuff to buy in the store and how well do they need to be sanded down to hold the material?

I did this with Bed-liner to my black chrome wheels and chrome gas cap. You need a wire brush/drill/Brillo pad or fine grit sand paper and bed liner or paint. Use the wire brush and take the chrome off to the metal. If you don't get a majority off, it will not sick to the chrome. Then, use a Brillo pad or sandpaper to get the hard to reach areas. Clean up with paint thinner or mineral spirits. Then shoot paint or bed liner. Here's some pics of my doing:

I don't have any solid pics, but I sprayed my chrome rails to black using Rustoleum Bedliner. prep it right and take your time painting and it should hold up great

I bet you can post here and on greg's list for someone to swap you out some black for your chrome. I bet there's a mall Jeeper out there that would love some chrome.

Thanks fellas. I'm going to put them up on the bulletin board. If nothing in a few weeks it will be a home project.

Good luck, IMO the black is a better choice over the chrome.

If you decide to paint them, use a couple coats of self-etching primer followed by a compatible top coat. It works very well. You could also scuff them up with some 400-grit beforehand if you like.
