Is it worth spending money on a CAI if you're going to replace it with a snorkel???

If that's the case you should get the Volant version...That way it will be money well spent. I think they sell a snorkel that you could later add-on when $$$ permits..

Found this on another thread....

Default cold air

I believe the snorkle would be an option that makes sense. I hear from folks on this forum that CAI sucks water into your intake manifold in water crossings. The intake sitting way high on your snorkle is gonna give u relief from that issue and your intake will actually be sucking air from outside the engine compartment therefore TRUE cold air intake. If I was gonna spend money on a mod it's gonna be a snorkle over a CAI every time.

Soooo, asking the same question of a snorkel that most ask of a CAI - what sort of performance benefit is gained from installing a snorkel (besides moving air intake higher on vehicle)? Seems like I see a lot of posts by those that install CAIs, mentioning HP or MPG gains, but I don't recall anything like that re snorkels. Any HP, or MPG gains with a snorkel?

Edit: OK, performed a quick search and saw a lot of textbook stuff re true cold air verses hot engine compartment air, etc., etc., but only a couple posts on MPG. One guy gained, and another lost MPG. I would have expected better given all the theory re "true" cold air (not questioning here that the air isn't colder, just that anecdotally, performance doesn't appear to be different).

The way I see it, a snorkel is only good for it's intended purpose; going through deep water.
While you may see an hp gain, I don't think you will see an mpg increase. This is because any potential mpg gain is negated by the additional air resistance created when you put a huge plastic pipe on the side of your jeep.
I recall seeing a thread about hydrolock a couple months ago and the question was for the people that hydrolocked their engine. Were they running a stock or aftermarket intake. About half had stock, half had aftermarket. But virtually all of them hit the water or were going through the water in such a way to create a huge splash or wake.
So the lesson here is it's not necessarily the type of intake that causes the hydrolock, it's the traveling through water like a screaming banshee that causes it.

Well there is one more snorkel benefit; it looks pretty cool on the jeep.

Default My 2 cents

I have a 08 JK 4door Rubicon. Installed Airaid Cold air, Airaid throttle body spacer, and Jet Performance stage 1. Dyno at 243rwhp 2 weeks ago. Much more power at take off thru mid range. If I dog it, I get 15 city. If I play nice I get 17-18 mpg with alot of power on demand. Absolutely love it over stock.

Just curious if you did a baseline Dyno before the upgrades? If so what was it?
