So my explanation is not that ridiculous after all. (I have lived that live in the past with first hand experience..)
okay, i hear what you're saying but even in the explorer tire issue, it seemed to me that there were just a lot of dumb people who didn't check their tire pressure on a regular basis and THAT is what caused them to blow out. in my opinion, that was NOT a design flaw by ford or firestone but rather, sue happy people trying to push blame for their lazyness to maintain their vehicle.

Steering Dampener.. I give you this.. It will always remain an "emotional" point of discussion. A good dampener can stop this initial oscillation..may be not in all cases.. Again it is difficult to discuss this as there are soooo many variables at play.. My earlier post was just aimed at giving some more in depth view of what this DW is all about. I agree a "perfect" dialed steering geometry will not have this oscillation. But alas, nothing is perfect in our lives..
a steering stabilizer can act as a good bandaid and it can help prevent DW - no question about it. however, that's all it is, a bandaid that helps to mask a problem and it will NOT fix anything. IF you can address the real cause of DW, a steering stabilizer simply is not needed - period.

Basic maintenance is a "conditio sine qua non" ..
absolutely

I've seen you say this before, but you do not want them parallel with the axle. The angles need to be engineered for roll center.

Someone posted that the steering on the Jeep was a bad design. I'm not sure, but I even think it was an engineer that said it. You have to be nuts. It's a very robust design! Think about it, we changed every angle needed to design for proper steering geometry, yet put the drag link and the track bar parallel to each other and it "usually" works out just fine. That's real world engineering with BILLIONS of miles behind it.

Very bad example. That was poor maintenance and the very reason we now have the stupid TPMS.

But whatever dude, we're just trying to help the people that are asking for it. If I didn't have experience in this, I wouldn't contribute.
And based on your response to some of us, I won't contribute to this thread anymore. Enjoy your death wobble...
seriously I'm not doubting you have experience with these things, and for the record I am looking forward to your stretch and want that damn tera bumper! but he doesn't have DW or a lack of knowledge on how to fix it.... just sayin

These DW threads are always interesting topics of discussion. I do like the fact that in this thread you get to observe other peoples problems and how they tried to resolve their issues.

That being said, it would seem that there are a multitude of issues that cause the wobbling of the front end. I don't think that there would be any argument that there may be a better way to design the front axles and the components that are directly related to them.

Hopefully this thread can offer up some helpful tidbits to someone who might be in need of help.

Thanks greenamphibious, good thread!
