Default Does this look normal?

I got talked into these pro Comp Xtreme MT tires. I noticed after the first rocky trial in Big Bear that they stared to "chunk". This is what they look like now after 3 rocky trails, 3 mild dirt trails and 5k as a DD. The 4 Wheel parts guy said its normal; of course. I think not.

yup, totally normal. we ran a set and destroyed them in no time. the xtreme mt's use a soft rubber compound which is great for hooking up on the rocks but, the downside is chunking. you should see what they look like after running out on the razor sharp rocks they have out in AZ as opposed to the round and relatively smooth boulders up in big bear

I assume to check the age of the tire I'm looking for a manufacture date on the tire? Is there a top secret code to decipher once I find it on the tire?

Is there a better choice in a tire? Big Bear is my choice of wheeling areas and I feel that these tires came apart too quickly, I mean 5 days after I installed them and 4 of those days was on the street! I was thinking of the Toyo Open Country MT or the Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ or MTZ.

My KM2's chunked real bad, even aired down to 10 psi. It was like after every trip more and more tread was chunked off. I wheel in southern Nevada, Arizona and SoCal. I was just in Big Bear last weekend.

That being said, last weekend was my first wheeling trip with my new Nitto Trail Grapplers, and they did not chunk at all. That made me very happy.

Thanks for the heads up on how soft these tires are. If those were my tires I would be disappointed.
