Evap skid plate ?
I've had an evap skid sitting in my garage for a year now, not sure if I should put it on. The thing weighs like 20-25 pounds. I'm hesitant to make my heavy 4-door even more tank like for something I doubt is critical. I mean, does the engine stop and leave you stranded if the evap gets smashed? Or is it just to save having to buy a stupidly expensive replacement from the dealer?
The reason I have one is because I was on the spot to spend dealer credit when I got my new Jeep and they had them at the Mopar shop.

in the over 5 years i have wheeling my white JK from bone stock to sitting on 40's, i have only knocked off my evap 3 times. once was bad enough to require replacement which at the time was something like $75. i assure you, you can drive around just fine without an evap canister. the check engine light on your dash will come on and you will be putting gas fumes into the atmosphere but, you will NOT be left sitting high and dry without one. needless to say, i still don't run one.
I put one on. Its good insurance. I have seen them get hit lose and had to wire them back up. If you rip it completely off you could be stranded.i look at it this way the 25 lbs skid and 97 lbs tire ea. Gives me more ballast to keep the tires on the trail .I did not notice the extra lbs the skid when i installed it and driving around.
you'll forgive me but, this is not true at all. i have run my jeep for weeks without an evap canister and without any problems.
this is so not true. "unsprung" weight, as what you would get with big heavy tires and bigger axles is ballast that will help keep your tires on the ground. "sprung" weight like what you would get with mods on your jeep hurts your center of gravity.

Haha....Yea, don't worry man. You won't be stranded if that thing gets rip'd off. The Evap canister is just for emissions. It won't kill your engine or anything like that. Check engine light will pop up, but it won't leave you dead in the water.
With that said, I did relocate mine above the rear axel. Never have to worry about it again.

Thanks. I'm no fool, I'm just questioning why people mess around with these bulky skid plates. It would be really stupid if they programmed the computer to shut you down for an emissions thing, but this is the most computerized vehicle I've ever owned. If they only cost $75 to replace, I'll take my chances. I won't pass emissions here without the stupid thing unless I can fake out the computer, so I do need it.
