Here's the deal: put out a brush fire. Put out a small oil fire on your transfer case, or even a smoldering flame when you cigarette falls behind your dash like someone posted. Yes.

BUT, never open your hood if your car/jeep is really on fire. They say an engine bay can burn as hot as 2,000 degrees due to the materials there. If it's burning, just get away and prepare to spend some insurance money on a new Jeep. Just get away safely.

I ended up getting a 2.5 pound tank an mounted it to the back seat with a rack from Doc at Springtail solutions. I am sure it probably could hold a 5 pound tank too. If I am wheeling without passengers I just fold the seat down and it is easy to reach from the drivers seat, but still out of the way.

Good advice. Jeeps can be replaced but Jeep drivers, their friends and families cannot.

I've used a 2.5 lbs ext to put out brake fires on munition trailers, and yes there is a lot of puker factor involved in putting out fires just below 8 air-to-air missiles, and that size is just enough for a small fire that is starting to take hold.

Anything else requires a 20 lbs ext or a full fledge fire truck (with foam and lots of couargaous fire-fighters) but at least you can start the battle, get help and get the f.... out.

No matter what, although you can end up with a fire that is beyond anything you can carrry in a Jeep, having a fire ext on board allows you to face most situations.

Also .... there is the "cool" factor involved. Off-roaders carry fire ext ..that's cool.

I've used mine (you can see the yellow recharge tag on the neck of the extinguisher).

It was used last fall on a TJ that had a power steering line come loose. The fluid caught fire on the hot engine. I was able to get out of my Jeep, grab the extinguisher, and put the fire out by the time he got his from the back. I think he had a rollbar mount, but I'm not sure.

All of you guys who put the fire extinguisher on the outside base of your front seats.... or on the rear roll bar... etc.... think about this: Say you have a crash --- more than likely it will jamb your doors shut right? Or you're stuck in the Jeep. So you can't get your extinguisher out if the inside is burning and you're stuck inside. ( ya ya I know it's worst case)

A 2lb extinguisher fits like a glove in the rear cup holders (I put two... one in each cup holder) and screw the extinguisher bracket to the back part of the console. (watch the electric window wires) Now if you need it while your stuck in the Jeep, just reach behind the console and grab the extinguisher. The second one is for if the fire starts back up.

I'll post pics later....

A 2 lb. unit isn't going to do much if your Jeep is burning to the ground. Get out of the vehicle and to safety and then worry about putting the fire out. Having the extinguisher right there while you're getting out is the idea.
