Firestone Destination???
.Anyways, that aside. I just put a set of them on mine and have no complaints thus far. Went with 285/70-17's for $180/tire out the door. I've pretty much been a BFG trumpet blower in the past....ran them pretty much exclusively (either AT, ATko, MT, or MTkm) on my Jeeps over the last 14 years with the exception of one set of Thornbids (hey, I was young...we all make mistakes
).I haven't had a chance to wheel them yet, but on the road they seem to be just as solid as my last set of MTkm's. I'd never had problems with the BFG's and wet traction and thus far I haven't had any with the Firestone's. I think the discrepancy between people's experiences here could be attributed to driving styles, dunno. Hoping to have them on the trail by the end of the summer, but I'm guessing they won't disappoint me there either. Here's a pic...
I wouldn't never buy Firestone tires again. They are junk and belong on old 77 Firebirds if that. They are made with inferior materials and aren't up to any kind of off road use with sidewalls made from silly putty and tread made from playdough. Buy something decent like B.F. Goodrich Mud Terrains, Nitto Mud Grapplers, Pitbull Rockers or Super Swamper Boggers/Thornbird. You don't on top of Firestones when they disinigrate on the freeway coming back from mudding.
Those tires look better on a JK than I thought. Hey 'drack are you running those stock? (any rubbing?) I'm thinking daystar 3/4" coil spacers should do it. I already have 1.5" spidertrax spacers.

Yeah, stock suspension so far. Gonna put on some sort of 2" lift (haven't decided which way I'm going yet, might hold out to see what OME throws at us), but there's plenty of room to drive around town. My wheels are 4.6" bs, so with your spacers you should have plenty of turning room with them.
"They just got a bad reputation in the hyped Ford Explorer rollovers."
Wasn't hyped in my experience. Firestone tires were in the past truly junk and will always in my mind be unworthy of my dollars. I had the same ATX tires on my Ranger and spotted cracks in them before they let loose on me. I got brand new replacements and traded them towards decent tires.
I worked at a Ford dealer during the period of which you speak and personally witnessed several tire failures on Explorers that didn't result in any rollovers but did in all cases cause considerable body and suspension damage. Anyways, if Firestone is so great then why you have Big O tires?

I had a set on my 2004 TJ and loved em. They were much better on wet streets than I expected, Not too loud on the highway, and were great in the mud. I put about 15k on my set before I traded the TJ in for my Jk. They still had at least 3/4 of the tread left. I DID rotate them every 5k. I likely won't lift my JK as it barely fits in my garage. If Firestone made a set to fit my 18" Sahara rims without needing a lift kit, they'd be on already.
I still run the stock Goodyears on the JK, BUT I have the Firestone Destination "LE" on a Nissan Armada. These are the street tires, not offroad. I've had them for about a month, don't know the wear yet... but tires ride great. I was on Goodyear before (same tires as on the JK) but there's a little more road noise with the Firestones. Only a little more noise, barely noticable. I'd put them on my JK.... but not before I got some reviews that mention the sidewalls. The tire guy told me that the LEs have a softer sidewall than the Goodyear, but that may not be the case with the off-road version. Hope that helps?
The destination mt's are a good tire. Everyone I know with them says they are comparable to the BFG MT's.
As for the hype with the tires on the ford explorer, those who are blaming just the tires need to do a little research on the subject. You would quickly find that ford spec'd the wrong tire and tire pressure on the explorers and rangers. Firestone should have spoken up about it but they didn't, they assumed the ford engineers knew what they were talking about. There was a huge lack of communication between the two parties and then when the problems arose they both pointed fingers.
Notice how nobody has mentioned the exact same issue that happened with the Excursions and Expeditions years later?

I had the 33 12.50s on my YJ and absolutely loved them. They were one of my favorite purchases for that rig. They were reasonably quiet on the road, handled well both wet and dry, and offroad, I never got stuck anywhere I went... Well, ok there was that one 8' snow bank I couldn't conquer... but thats a story for another time.
They really looked awesome too.
Tread life was excellent, and they were actually 33" tall as opposed to the 32.25" - 32.5 " of most other 33" tires. I put about 30,000 miles on them, half freeway and half Pacific NW trails, stumps, rocks and mud. I that time, I never lost or even severely damaged a lug, and when I sold the rig, they had better than 50% tread remaining. They also tended to 'Clean Out' much better than the BFGs that preceded them. I was amazed at how few rocks and mud stayed between the lugs on those tires compared with the BFGs that seemed to be throwing rocks at my rig for days after I left the trail.
My only negative statement is that 33" is as big as they get. On my JK, I'm going to 35s and I really wanted a set.
If you want 33s, I could not suggest a better tire.
