goodyear mtr / kevlar
These tires are great. I have a set of them sitting in my shed, with about 4k miles on 'em, and totally unable to sell. No one wants them.
They do a wonderful job of holding the shed floor in place, and give insects a good place to breed.
I'm being facetious, of course, but not by much.
I got the MTR/K and loved them, up until the very very very thin rubber on the sidewalls started wearing off. Between them looking like crud, and coming across some bigger SSRs for cheap, I took off the MTR/Ks. And there they have sat. I've tried to sell them for a tiny fraction of the price. Heck, I even tried GIVING them away to one guy, and he didn't want 'em.
You can see what these things look like after you've gone through a few loose rock areas. This was only after maybe a month or two of easy to moderate trails.
Of course, they are still safe, just ugly as heck. And of course Goodyear has the "too bad, so sad, don't care" attitude. So I'm stuck with very very expensive paperweights :p
Ok... now beyond the fact that they look like crud...
These are top of the line awesome tires. The tread is amazing, muds, rocks, sand, ice... you name it, they'll roll through it without problem. They can run at low PSI without beadlocks very well, the sidewalls are every bit as great as goodyear claims.
And they are amazingly quiet! Now, mine were smallish at 32", but they were no louder than an AT tire. They only time I could very faintly detect any MT tire hum was on sharp turns at a good clip.
Frankly, they're a great tire - minus the way too thin black rubber on the sidewalls and Goodyear's terrible customer satisfaction policies.
If you aren't in an area with loose rock, you'll probably be good. But some of this stuff we have around here is near like shale. Just be warned, that my complaint seems to be the big complaint many people have with these tires.
Aaaaaaand, there's my two cents on those tires.

Love my MT/R Goodyears! They haven't left me stuck in the woods yet. They are not wide or tall but they grip like hell and are great in snow, mud and on the high way!
recommend them to anyone who needs tires for the rocks, mud, or snow.

Wow, I wonder if this has happened to anyone else, I haven't heard anything bad about these tires until this issue, and I know a lot of people that wheel with them wheel very hard and don't have this issue. Maybe because most have the black walls and lettering?
Nope, got 'em from a Goodyear store. And no, didn't happen to the spare. Not from any chemical - this is purely from rubbing off on rocks. Normal wheelin', not even anything insane. And this is the only tires I ever have seen do this - even out at Superlift.
The Goodyear store denied the warranty claim at first because I "took them off road". I laughed and brought up the fact that these are OFF-ROAD TIRES. Then they told me this is normal wear, the tires are structurally sound, and that I'm stuck with 'em.
I emailed Goodyear corporate and they've basically blown me off, saying I should go to a Goodyear store to resolve my problems. Hah.
I wish they'd buy 'em back, but if they want to just warranty them, I'd be overjoyed. Then maybe I could sell them.

Wow alt_phil that is ..... well the pits.
I just got a set of 35's when I lifted my JK. They replaced a set of TOYO 33" Mud terrains. The Toyo's and GY's were essentially the same weight. I have been very pleased so far in that the noise level is down, handling the same, better on snow and wet roads, and for some unknown reason I have gotten back about 1 mpg (?
). So far I am sold although I did like the look of the Toyo a little better. Here's a pic:

Re Phils post above: Thats exactly what a set of my tires looked like when I rode on them flat for about a mile or so when I was a teen. Apparently when the tire is flat and driven on, it takes the sidewall off like this also.
