Dual battery is definitely a nice to have but isn't absolutely needed until you really over load the alternator by running lots of electronics at the same time.

One of the nicest perks of a dual battery set up is that you can always jump start yourself!

At what point is it a good idea to go to a high output alternator?

Honestly the stock alternator is good enough. Depending on the year the JK has a 140 amp to 160 amp alternator. Its hard to overload that.

I think a duel battery set up is nice and if one fails your on the trail I think that will come in handy!

If the battery is old then yes you will have trouble but only two or three years won't be an issue.
