Help with Muffler... Throaty Sound
Hi Everyone,
Sorry for another muffler thread...
I'm having a little difficulty finding all of the sound clips which may be floating around.
I was also hoping to narrow the search by asking for a little more specific advice.
My primary goal for swapping out mufflers is to get one which amplifies the lower frequency sound at lower RPMs (idle up to about 1,500 RPM). And for the sound above 1,500 RPM, I would prefer that it also accentuate the lower frequency sound from the exhaust. (I hate to put it this way; but, the only way I know how to really describe it is to say that I want it to the opposite of "ricey". I'm looking for something as "throaty" as possible with the JK powerplant. Does that make sense?)
I'm also interested in power gain, although that isn't the primary reason for the swap.
I have already relocated the Evap canister, so I am really looking at tucking the muffler up near the frame rail close to the rear axle on the left side of the JK. Is that a pretty plan, or might it be better to consider installing it at the location of the OEM muffler?
Thanks for any input... especially links to sound clips that I may have missed.
Jeff

X2!!! My biggest fear is buying and putting on a muffler that ends up sounding like a civic.
Hi Mike,
Thanks for your post.
MBRP was one of the videos with sound that I did listen to on Sunday.
I really don't know how to describe what I am looking for, other than to say it would be more subtle than the MBRP. MBRP is closer than some of the others that I have heard; but, I just prefer something different. I guess everyone has their own tastes.
Thanks for the reply.

You'd probably be really happy with a Magnaflow. Most people don't like them because they feel they aren't loud enough.. but I love the sound at idle. Always subtle and the only time you hear a Magnaflow drone at all is at highway cruising speeds. It puts people to sleep.
Seriously though, the larger the muffler, the deeper the sound. Just a fact to consider.

check out the link in my sig to my flowmaster 80 series, i get lots of compliments on how deep and throaty it sounds. The vid in that link was when it was new, it has gotten a bit deeper now as well.
here is what i did.... i went to the muffler shop and they installed a magnaflow bullet type muffler right next to the evap canister under the driver, it was like a 4 or 5 inche cylinder type and after a couple of days, i decided it sounded like crap... so i didnt know what to do, so i went ahead and visited another local muffler shop and they went ahead and installed a flowtech raptor muffler in the stock location... keep in mind that i left the magnaflow right where it was, so now my jeep had 2 mufflers installed, but wow, now it sounds nice and low and has a nice growl to it, it kinda reminds me of the sound that i used to get from my stock land rover discovery... i wish i knew how to record and upload a sound clip... it really sounds awesome, especially when i have the top down... i really recommend it....

Thanks for the input... I looked on Magnaflow's site over the weekend; but, I couldn't find any sound bites.
Any idea where I might find a sound bite of a Magnaflow? (I will search on my own, as I really haven't done a very good job of looking.)
Thanks again for your post.

That is an interesting concept. I'm kind of waiting to see if anyone else jumps in... just to know if the two mufflers could create too much backpressure, or something. I don't know that I would spend the money on two mufflers installed in series... but, I sure would like to hear what your JK sounds like!
Take Care

Thanks for the directions to your video clip.
The sound you have is getting pretty close to what I am imagining. I know that I'll be tearing the tip(s) up, so I would prefer to go with a single discharge, and with the muffler tucked between the axles. I was looking at the FlowMasters earlier this week, and if I remember correctly, there are different configurations for the exhaust from the muffler.
I have also read a little about the FlowMaster 40 and the FlowMaster 50, with the 50 being just slightly quieter than the 40. Did you by any chance look at those before you bought your 80?
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and video.
Jeff
