K&N Drop In Filter
Hello guys. My jeep isnt too modded. I have had 265/70/16 tires on my jeep from day 1. This is really the only mod that would change my MPG but about a month ago i snagged a KN Filter on ebay for 20 bucks and put it in. I was normaly getting about 16 17 MPG around town. In the past few weeks I have slowly seen my MPG go down. This past fill up I got 14 MPG. Could the Filter have anything to do with it?
I putter...lol So yea I drive the same. I could care less for HP I was just hopen to bump maybe 1 MPG for 20 bucks and somehow lost 2 MPG for 20 bucks. lol. This week I have been babying it to see if it was my foot and it seems like i am going faster this week than last week. I have went from F to 3/4 in 65 miles
It could just be a delayed distribution of the infamous winter blend fuel in your area.
The K&N filter should not reduce gas mileage unless you used molasses instead of the proper oil.
If you doubt it, just replace it temporarily with your stock filter.

I have a drop in KnN filter on my JK and got about 20 mpg hwy when it was stock. Now with a 4" lift (stock tires still on) I get about 19.5 mpg. Not sure if the filter has anything to do with the good mileage or my conservative driving. I drive about 70 mph on the highway.
Are you relying on the dash read out for the mileage or are you actually doing the math to figure out your mileage? Dash usually is close but not always accurate.
Really there is no one silver bullet that will cause a decrease in mileage. Just dropping in the K&N filter won't in and of itself cause your decrease in mileage. Try narrowing down potential causes by process of elimination.
Here are some questions to ask yourself...
Have your driving habits changed? Are you heavier on the skinny pedal?
Do you always fill your tank with the same brand gas? Same station? (Oddly, really pay attention if you frequent the same station to the amount of gas you're putting in. I caught a local station playing funny with the pumps. Try pumping 21 gallons of gas into a vehicle that has a max capacity of 19 gallons.
)
Have you guys been getting much colder temps? (Colder denser air will causer a little more fuel consumption.)
Are you letting your car run longer to warm up?
Are you using your defroster much? (I notice a drop in mileage when I use the defroster as it engages the condenser pump(?) which puts more drag on the engine.)

I do the math. every tank. I am kinda OCD about it. My past 2 autos have had issues with the fuel guage. It has just got cold in the past 2 wks gotten really cold here I dont know that I have been letting my jeep warm up longer but might be.
The change in fuel is something I have not thought about.

My stock JK with 3.21 and 32s made about 15mpg. I put a straight pipe on and the drop in filter. I shift at 2,500 usually and I'm getting 19 to 20 mpg city and 22mpg highway. *scratches head*. the math also shows this as well. Its been a week and I drive about 30 miles a day and I'm at about a half tank now. So ~30 * 7 days is 210 miles for a half tank. So 420 miles divided by 18.5 gallons is 22.7 mpg. I think its about 20 really.
