Yeah some of the cheap ones get hot quick, and are painfully slow. The advantage to a faster pull speed is less time to get back to action, and emergency situations where you need the vehicle moved quickly such as being submerged in water

For what it's worth, based on price and company reputation I chose the new 9500i winch from Quadratec with the integrated solenoid. I know Quadratec is a great company that stands behind their products. So far I have been very impressed and it was only $350.

Default winches

I have been involved with HEAVY rigging for 25 years synthetic rigging is FRAGILE it has its place, but I have yet to see synthetic rope on a crane. I am not by any means knocking synthetic rope I just would not throw a good wire rope to rush out and buy synthetic. As for Warn winches they are like my Freedoms arms revolver, everybody compares themselves to them. I do love the built in compressor and no one else has it.Click image for larger version

Lol. Hate to tell you, but synthetic is stronger. They actually use the stuff on ships because they don't rust

I'd think it comes down to a cost/benefit calculation. Synthetic is stronger but weakens more with abrasion, ya? Does the company want to be replacing synthetic cables every time the cable is used too hard? Or for ships, does it make more sense since the elements eat up the steel quicker than the lines wear out from use? ...The win usually goes to what is lowest cost overall.

I never said wire rope was stronger I said synthetic rope is FRAGILE, I have seen synthetic rigging abused, when it is losded up and it comes into contact with a sharp object it parts faster than you can let off the tension. Letting syn. rope break over a rock one time could damage it and then it is hard to detrmine how much you have decreased its capacity. I am not saying one is better than the other hell I might run it on mine when mine wears out. I was just pointing out syn ropes biggest downfall. Both types will fail if used wrong it is not preaty I have seen it happen.

Yeah, but when cable fails, the whip last can be devestating. Synthetic... Nada. Yes you have to be careful to protect rope against abrasion more than wire, but rope can't rust. Both definitely have their uses

You guys that compare these cheepo copy cat winches to Warn make me laugh. They are like comparing a H1 Alpha to a Nissan Xterra.

Everyone's needs are different. If you don't need an extremely reliable proven HD winch, than the $300 one will probably do fine and get you home. I have seen plenty of guys use them. They work just fine and there are some really nice ones out there. Eg Recon. They are not the fastest. You do need to let them cool off sometimes. But, they will get you home in most cases, and you will still have left over $ to spend elsewhere.

You just can't compare the 300 dollar product to Warn. Yes, they are expensive. They are expensive because warn has been at the top of their game for over 50 years. First responders don't strap a Harbor Freight winch to the front of their ambulance. The reason being when you need it most , you need it to work , and you needed to work well.

Duty cycle and line speed make a big difference during complicated recoveries. Anybody who has spent enough time out on the trail know this as fact and no statistics are needed to back it up.
