Rear.

Two reasons:

#1. You normally need a locker when you're going uphill. When you're going uphill there is extra weight on your rear wheels, and less weight on your front wheels. Lock the wheels that are more likely to give you a substantial amount of forward "push".

#2. You can lock your rear and still retain some directional control with your open front. If you lock your front and leave the rear open, you'll have very limited directional control.

you can't be doing any serious wheelin. lockers would have saved my ass many-o-times. plus after watching my buddy's 75hp yj get stuck and all he does is lock it up and it crawls out. then watch my other buddy with a 300hp 350 chev not make the same hole. just my opinion.

It's "just your opinion" but it's also the opinion of better than 90% of the people that have off-road experience. When the going gets tough, lockers are a HUGE advantage.

Definitely lock up the rear first if you can only do one. Makes a substantial difference off-road. Lets you slowly crawl through the bad stuff, rather than rely on momentum (which is when stuff starts to break). For most people that wheel frequently, the rear is all that is needed.

If you later decide you want more, you can install an Aussie in the front, which is relatively inexpensive and can be done in your own garage.

Desertdawg I have a two door just like you and running 305 70 17s right now and was looking at the eaton to go with 4.88 instead of 5.13s. Two questions for you. How do you like the Eaton is it a relaible product. Also I live in Az so rockcrawling is our thing is the 5.13s over kill? I was just looking at 4.88s cause I dont want to lose that much gas milage. I will be going to 35s at tax time.

see here we go again everyone slams me for not having lockers, and tells me I dont wheel. well Here in the local off road park i have run almost every black and red trail with my JK and TJ. and the TJ is only 2 inches of lift and 32 inch tires, the rest is stock. lockers are over rated, yes i do wheel very hard. Just because some of us dont need them dont slam us. I know plenty of guys that wheel circles around locked rigs, besides me, with open diffs. It all boils down to how you read the trail, pick your line, and finesse the skinny pedal.
