Siping is a process of cutting thin slits across a rubber surface to improve traction in wet or icy conditions.

What bigredjk said, sipping pushes water out from the tire. Most mud terrains don't come sipped which makes them dangerous when it rains. The overall rubber on the Toyo is pretty soft too which makes them safer in the winter. Some tires have a harder rubber which is dangerous on freezing or icy roads. I love my toyos, I rotate them every 3,000 miles and they still look new after 28,000 miles. They are also easy to balance.

I have the black rock d windows, I love them, just different enough of a wheel. They are tough and wheel well. Although they have some light rock rash from wheeling, but hey any wheel can get that.

I've got Hankook Dynapro M/T's on mine and I love them. I've only got about 2500 miles on them, but I've done a mixture of highway, city, and trail/mud and they do great. They aren't sipped, but they do have the holes for studs. I live in Louisiana, so I'm never going to use that.

I've gotta recommend Nitto's! AT or MT both are great.
