Default No muffler?

Hey guys I just took my muffler off because I thought something was wrong with it because I heard a grinding noise around 5500 rpms. I thought maybe with my Gibson dual exhaust it was shaking enough to make that noise. So i take it off turn the jeep on and still the same noise. Come to find out it was the carry over tube of the exhaust that had one out of the three clips rusted off. I welded it back on and it the noise was taking care of.

However! I love the sound, I love the torque and I love my mpg. Now ur all thinking I'm nuts I should have more with the muffler on but I don't.

Is there a downside to not having it on? I live in Michigan and it's no louder than when I had it on so I don't think the cops care too much I'm more worried about the life of my baby.

Let me know please!

I have a '12 and have been running without a muffler for a few months, I absolutely love the tone over the dynomax I had on previously... My butt dyno says performance has improved as well as a mileage boost, no problems yet and it is about the same noise level as the dm was. There are a few others on here who have done the same and are just as happy with it.

I smashed the tip of our stock exhaust on our second wheeling trip (oops). Thought about buying an AFE system but wanted to try simply removing the muffler first. I love it! Best cheap (free) free mod I've done

The only draw-back is it sounds a little rice-rockety above 2500 RPM when first started and the engine is still running open loop. Once it warms up it sounds great. I have had several people ask what "system" I'm running.

The stock exhaust to muffler connection is just after the the hump over the rear axle. When you remove the muffler the pipe is pointing down. I lust left it that way... I have wheeled naked and never smelled/noticed anything. It would be extremely easy to put it back on for inspection and then remove. I took mine off in about 5 minutes. Although you might need to clean-up the pipe/muffler to put it back on easily.

So better sound, better performance, free, and zero issues? Why doesnt everyone do this? What are the major drawbacks?

It sounds ok inside the jeep, but from outside...not really so much . I did the same for awhile, then got tired of it and clamped a $60 flowmaster super 10 on the back. Still super aggressive but much better tone.

So possibly a stupid question but, what is the difference from installing a $60 muffler to installing a $300 cat back system? Anything at all, or just a sticker price... I have a CAI and I'd like to compliment it with more flow....

I have hear the AFE and Magnaflow systems in person and they DO sound better, But at over $400 less I am okay with the compromise. Maybe once I have ran out of better things to mod on the Jeep I will do this, but for now I'm happy. As for "Better-Performance" I haven't noticed any difference better or worse. My MPG (Which I chart, cuz I'm a nerd) has averaged the same since I pulled it off.

The sound warm VS cold is huge... Don't Judge it too quickly when you first start it. There is also a big difference in sound while driving VS sitting in the driveway and revving it... I do agree that it sounds better from inside the Jeep than from out, but I'm the one that its for. Quite frankly I don't care what other think.

Edit... I have the 3.6L (13') I have heard a 3.8L and didn't care for it... Don't know why it is so different, but it is.

0.1567 wheel horsepower. In all seriousness, save you money and just buy a muffler only. I do think a flowmaster 40/ Super 44 would give you a little better performance, as the super 10 loses you a little back pressure. But a $600 catback on these engines isn't doing much at all when you factor in our lifts, tires and aerodynamics.
