Face it... It's a V6 it is never going to sound like a muscle car. The best you can hope for is a system is a slightly deeper tone, but the modulation will be the same. Tone is usually a product of tube diameter and bends not the muffler.
Taking the resonator off gives you a MUCH deeper sound

I had my muffler off for one day while I was building my new exhaust and I could not have been more embarrassed to drive around. The drop in back pressure resulted in a major loss of torque, which equates to worse gas mileage..not to mention the obnoxiously loud ricer tone. It was so loud that it set off car alarms when driving through the parking lot.

You guys are nuts if you truly like it sans muffler.

I agree with you completely when talking about a pre-12' 3.8L. But the 3.6L has a completely different sound and no (noticeable) adverse performance. Comparing the sound of a 3.8 to a 3.6 without muffler is like comparing an apple to a hammer. I'm not saying the sound is for everyone but the 3.6 isn't too bad either (for a V6). This said, I still plan to get an aftermarket system once I'm done doing more important mods. For now... I think no muffler is better than the stocker.

It's too hot to go outside to check, but what's needed to remove the muffler as far as tools? Is there a trick to getting the hanger out of the rubber mount?

Pry bar helps, but I've never used it. Just pull and twist like hell.
