Actual size is 0.580", about 37/64; closest to 9/16 or 0.5625". There are NO threads on the shaft, just a notch and a flat area to accomodate the standard POS knob. The T-case shift lever is the same design, but closer to 7/16 diameter with the same notch and flat area. Both knobs are press on, pop off style - and they are known to rattle.
Tried taking the knob off. You need to remove bottom casing of knob, pry off rubber protection, pop off the head with a screw driver. Underneath the head is a metal casing which acts as a key. That needs to be popped off with a screwdriver as well. Once this is off, the rest of the knob should slide right off. The shaft is thicker than older models. I found that out the hard way and bought a knob that would fit an older model. Now I have to make the hole on this knob bigger.
Hope that helps

FYI it does work on the 2012 transfer case selector. Clip your fingernails. ( do this once a week, should have done it before I tried this modification). Shift the selector in to 4 low. Get a two handed grip, and summon some serious motivation. Giver her a good tug adn watch your teeth. I sliced my left middle finger open with my right thumb nail. I am clipping now. They arent long enough to extend past my finger tip or even close to it, but they are sharp mothers.
Anyway the shift selector poped right off, and right back on for that matter. I am addind seat heat, adn if you take the transfer case knob off you can remove the center console easier. that makes drilling the holes for the round toggle switch easier. FYI
