Default RIPP Engine Integrity Question

For starters, let me say that I'm really enjoying the RIPP Supercharger I've got and I'm just waiting on dynotuning to see what kind of numbers I'm getting and to make sure I'm making as much power as I can be. Thus far it's absolutely been worth every penny.

Someone told me this evening that Dan at Burnsville Off Road said he's sold RIPP several 3.8L engines because they've blown several of their in house motors. So really this is aimed at RIPP, is this true? I've never heard anything about this and only ever hear about 50k miles plus on the in house RIPP JK. I'd also like to say that I take this information with a grain of salt, considering Dan didn't tell me directly, so it's third party info, but since I'd never heard anything about this until now, and I just had a RIPP SC put on my 3.8 just under 500 miles ago, now I'm worried.

So is it true? Or is this just something Dan told someone, along with how he's taken several RIPP superchargers off of JKs, as a way to put down competition and hype a hemi install?

Why would you take it as a bad thing? If they are going thru the proper R&D process they should be pushing several motors to failure, find out what failed and the root cause so they can prevent it on their product. It sounds like your guy had good info just bad reasoning behind it. I wouldn't get to spun up until you talk to someone at RIPP.

I was thinking the same thing. Well almost. I was thinking if your going to make an omelet you're going to have to break a few eggs. I wonder how may 3.8L blew up just testing it for the JK?

Seeing as you can get exceptionaly low milage 3.8's for next to nothing I am sure they went thru a few.

Oh as far as the R&D front goes, blow up 20 of them, but Dan (and again 3rd party info here) made it seem like this was a recent thing, which would concern me. If it's in the R&D process 2 years ago, I'm not sweating. I've been very pleasantly surprised with my RIPP experience and am having a blast with it, but I don't want to blow up my engine. Aside from a few lightning bolt issues within the first 100 miles, it's been great (they were a result of my older kit not having the TRD fix done yet).

Edit: As a side note the worst thing I can thusfar say about my RIPP SC is that my mileage has not improved, which I'm sure has ZERO to do with the fact that my foot is always finding a reason to squish the skinny pedal.

Completly agreed, all I would add is that R&D is a continous process (even after product has gone to market) and who is to say they arent working on another version or different style for the JK?? I dont have any experience with RIPP, but I would talk to them before I got spun up. Everything I have heard and seen says they have great customer service and will probably tell you straight out how many they have blown up and why.

I can say with complete confidence that their customer service is second to none. I've asked so many questions before my kit was installed, after it was installed and will probably ask more still. It was late and as good as their customer service is, I didn't expect them to be on at this hour.

If the thread seemed accusatory it wasn't intended to be, actually quite the contrary RIPP has been so up front about everything I found it hard to believe that the 3.8s they bought were a recent thing, much like I believe most of the superchargers dan removed were last year. I know many people have dealt with Dan and BOR, but my one brief conversation with him was less than inspiring, and I was frankly wondering if his saying these things was an attempt to steer someone away from a RIPP kit and towards a hemi or whether there was something to be concerned about. Implying that a company is going through engines left and right and saying they lost a couple during R&D are radically different things. And well of course it is 3rd party info, so who knows how it was actually said or if anything was misunderstood.

I remember when the Nissan 350z first came out and GReedy was trying to turbo it. They blew up numerous motors, over 20, from what I know. I say let them blow up all the motors they want so they can learn instead of you.

Its pretty hard to blow up a 3.8, we've been trying for 55000 miles ( knock on wood -careful what you wish for)!

If 3.8's are blowing up its news to us - We have purchased engines from Dan, to be exact TWO! We've bought one engine for R&D and a second (using our discount) as a favor to a client who did their own install and had an "issue"... As far as we know there are no blown engines running around.

Respectfully - if there are, it should have been brought to our attention and we would use the info to make the kits stronger. The consensus is the systems run soundly and problem free. Which collectively is what you can find consistently through every forum.

In what is now 150 kits sold solid - we know of the 3 sold used from this forum and one removed by the client who had the mishap. That's +/- a 98% satisfaction rate... we wish it was 100% but everyone has different needs.

Lastly - it goes without saying that your entitled to say or write anything you want. But considering our good standing with all JK communities - and how much we lend ourselves to all our clients and forumswe could have chosen a better thread title or simply asked. This one is extremely misleading moreover demeaning.

I don't understand why people bring this to a forum before talking to the manufacturer first it some guy says he is blowing 3.8s with a RIPP he should have the professional courtesy to mention it to RIPP before blabbing it to customers and/or potential customers.....

just sayin
