He's talking about the fact that the pinion gear is tiny on a D30, and wheeling puts a ton of stress on it. 5.13's have more teeth and are finer, and therefore won't be as durable as 4.88's

We use to say the same thing about 4.56s in D44 20yrs ago.

The 5.13 pinion is smaller and has fewer teeth. Which means less contact surface( fewer teeth engaged) with the ring gear.

In all actuality +90% of the members here don't wheel hard enough for that to come into play. Not everyone wants to climb a 3ft-4ft under cut ledge.

Love your setup skibovr. Looks great!

My setup:

AEV 2.5" w/ 35" Maxxis Bighorn on 17x9.

Auto 5spd w/ 3.73 on 3.6L Pentastar but plan to re-gear to 4.56 to keep my Daily Driver in the sweet spot and because I haul a camper and hit the trails once in a while. Lost a little pep w/ 35s but livable for now. Towing 3500lbs up Wolf Creek Pass CO is a tad ruff.

He has a Dana 30 front, smaller ring gear. I wouldn't run 5.13's if he plans on wheeling it

He's doesn't have a penstar. He'll need more gear...

The 5.13 ring gear has 2 more teeth than a 4.88 ring gear, therefore it has more teeth, which means less surface to contact the pinion gear. Less material to contact the pinion gear is what makes them weaker

I stand corrected on the tooth count.

4.88 39-8
5.13 41-8

Other way around....

5.13 if wheeling....4.88 if not....

And with the Pentastar and Expedition style Jeep (with trailer) on 35s:

4.88 if you're wheeling, 4.56 for more highway mpg and still a huge bump in torque over 3.73.

If he wants the jeep with the best performance on the road he needs to run 5.13's. If he's wheeling he should go with the 4.88's to get a little stronger R&P. This is my Opinion, I would never gear based on MPG, if I cared about that I would have bought a VW turbo diesel
