You used the brush on paint vs. the spray can correct? How much did it take to do the rear axle? I'm thinking I'll tackle this too but not sure how much I'll need. How's it been holding up?

I used some of that spray on yesterday on a part yesterday. It was starting to build some pretty hefty rust so I wire wheeled it clean and a few areas still had a little rust....So I spayed this on and then read the can...because who would ever read something before use...? Anyhow it said it will convert rust but would also cause rust if applied to non-rusty locations. And it did leave a lite surface rust.

I sanded and prepped the gas tank skid since it was getting rusty. I used the spray on stuff since it's all i could find. I stuck to just spraying the rusty areas with the loctite converter then sprayed the entire skid with rustoleum black. I want to work on the rear axle next. Am I best to use the same procedure? just spray the loctite on the rust spots then spray the entire axle with black paint? I don't want a spotted axle with fresh paint and factory paint but I wasn't sure if it was safe to just spray bomb the entire axle. Anything I should avoid with the paint?

I've been using ospho on rusty spots then paint the whole piece with Walmart rust converter/ paint. It looks factory with the satin paint and the combo holds up better than rust-oleum. The rusto gave up on the inside of the gas tank skids where salt and sand starting eating it up.
I also ended up grinding out where the two plates overlap and welded them back up, rust-proofed, then hammered it hard with paint. |
Rust?
I think some of you guys are getting confused between "FRAME RUST" and general appearance cosmetics.
YES, frame rust is a real problem. My 08 is looking pretty bad, and I regret not dealing with the FRAME when it was brand new.. Next Spring, I'll brush on POR 15. I want to remind you of the PROBLEM - frame rust. . I've never heard of a rear end rusting out, skid pans are meant to be scratched and to rust a bit, drive shafts with acumjulations of paint or oil become mis-balanced, ball joints and suspension parts don't rust out - and mufflers . exhaust items get HOT. Most of these things aren't meant to be painted, and some can be dangerous when painted. |
Buying a 15 Soon
Going to jump in on this as well looking for advise. This will be my first Jeep purchase and this is what the undercarriage of the 15 looks like Im considering buying. Its spent its entire life in Virginia , is this anything thats raises a red flag for anyone that I should consider passing on it ?

4 years old, no under coverage preventative maintenance. Looks about right to me. I would have no concerns purchasing that.
