Skid plates are here!!
Don't bother sanding them etc... Just wash'em off, treat them with Metal Ready-also from POR15 and if you want rattle can it. Honestly, the only reason to do that is to protect it from UV's which doesn't really happen underneath. I'd leave it POR15. Three coats'll just about bullet proof it. Yeah, I'm a huge fan of POR15 products. DON'T PRIMER them if you're using Chassis Coat.
I Worked In Industrial Coatings For Years And The Best Way For Bare Steel Is To Use An Etching Primer And Then Apply Your Coating Of Choice, Then There Will Be No Chance Of Rust.
People just don't understand the beauty of POR15. Here's straight from their site:2. Make sure surface to be painted is
bone-dry. Use a hairdryer if necessary.
3. You must use Metal-Ready fi rst if you are
painting POR15 on new steel, galvanized
metal , aluminum, or any smooth metal
surface.
4. Do not apply POR-15 to a “tacky” surface.
Wait till the fi rst coat is dry to the touch before
applying a second coat of POR-15
-A good degrease, Metal ready then brush or spray it on. Top coat it if the sun's gonna hit it. It's designed to go on bare metal, primer actually stops it from doing what it oughta..
They are not stainless. I knew they were not finished when I ordered them, to be honest I wanted it that way. EVERYTHING i have ordered "finished" (multiple bumpers, rockers, tire carriers )was dinged/scraped during delivery. The shit is so heavy there isnt any way to prevent it.
I think it's horsesh*t that Treks doesn't finish their skid plates for what they charge. I'm glad you're happy with what you got, but they should have charged you less for an unfinished product. Thanks for the post it makes my future skid plate buying decision easier.

I believe the metal ready is an etching primer.
