Stock tire carrier with 35" tire issues?
Maybe more than one, but a couple of stories of cracked welds on an old design gets repeated over and over on several jeep forums and it gets way overblown. A problem that is exacerbated by poor installation.
The internet is a wonderful thing. Now everyone is selling their TF hinge, lol.
This is pictures of the spot welds failing that I already acknowledged is an issue. I asked for pictures of a hinge failure. It's interesting though that there are no shots of if extended isolators were used to control the wiggle or not.
And yes, I know of three local shops that will repaint a JK gate for less than $450 and spray a new one for even less as there is less prep.
I don't think this is overly expensive, but if the shoe fits I think it should be worn. Their earlier carriers did have some failures and they have yet to recall them.
Don't get me wrong, I think running the factory carrier is less than ideal and if you have the coin to replace it you probably should. But I know a lot of guys that are having success running 35s and even some running 37s that haven't had issues.

that you should know realy isnt worth taking if your afraid of the result ad costs ,thats my point is if it does happen your going to be out a lot more money than if you had just got one up front and forget it ! you know ?? i myself wouldnt suggest running a 33 nitto of 84 pounds back there , and thats all i have but lift one and you wouldnt want that weight hanging anywhere to be quite honest. i dont like the tire inside or going with out one . but no way do i trust that 84lbs hanging from the flimsy at best tire carrier on the thin metal door over any big bumps ! and yet i understand what your saying too being that more people get away with it for a bit till they finaly buy one knowing that luck will run out as time goes on .
I just don't like it when people make up issues. While the sheet metal and spot welds are a point of concern there are things that can be done to help them service. I have read on several forums and threads that the hinges will fail, but have yet to see a single picture. I even have done all kinds-of searches. I'm not trying to call anyone liars, but I would like to see the evidence of this. From what I can tell this is a YJ/TJ issue that's been unjustly correlated to the JK.
my 2011 sport was my first jeep i had no clue i was in for all the added expenses !
but the tires had to go
and then i was mounting the tire and read they fail with heavy tires ! i asked on the forum here and every one said noooooooo get one ! so i did but ill say this , it was a pita to put on but its been a very worthy gate i feel . i guess the idea of opening one gate i can see, but i dont find it inconvieniant all to open the gate first .
in fact most people are asking about the gate it swings open very easy and the teraflex one wasnt out yet when i bought mine . i traded my sport and got the rubicon and removed the gate and put it on this one and again i still like its simplicity and strength and i can add more weight to it racks anything and its not on the door . the terea flex one broke shortly after there launching of this product . i believe they paniced over the incedent and scrambled to make sure it didnt happen again such as with thier heavy duty track bar break lol again redesigned quickly . so no further publicity would effect the sales ! never heard much about the correction in steel , im positive they did get better inspections , a 37 inch tire bouncing down the road or a 35 33 or 32 is nothing to brush off the shoullder like no biggie , i dont know anyone who would take that as insignificant to purchasing one . i just bought the teraflex hd monster track bar, i hope they made it better as well as the tire carrier thats all . quality control sucks on a lot of things we pay top dollar for . not all of us have endless pockets to empty out for a crappy product ! or dangerous more importantly .

I've heard nothing but good things regarding the TeraFlex hinge/carrier and those can take a 37" so the 35" would be fine. Stout enough to handle the tire and you'd still be able to open the rear door as normal w/o having to open a tire carrier first. They're not too pricey, and as someone posted earlier, deals can be found. It's the one I'm going with (waiting to do some upgrades - saved the pennies, got some projects lined up for Spring)
i couldnt care less sock for every stinky shoe !
but as you read from other posters thier has been more than one incident and up for sale a lot maybe you could swing the used one ! me my self and i prefer quality , i dont want to see a tire passing me on my left and find out its mine
maybe youl get second generation who knows ?
i like somthing you can build on , not another flimsy thing that when i want to add a jack i have to look for another product . id just bolt it to the carrier it has the holes all pre drilled and then ill add my jerry can holder and upper rack onto it too. love it !

My Yeti 45 quart cooler mounted above my 37's would probably stick up a good bit over the roofline!

galvinised unistrut used for hanging electrical pipes and plumbing pipes it wont rust and hit it with some bed liner two nice rigid mounts and then you can add your jerry cans from that as well make brackets and holders 20x36 Cargo Carrier for 2" Trailer Hitches - Designed for ATV's Tow Ready Hitch Cargo Carrier TR65852
and two short say, 3 foot pieces of this bed lined black mounted to the carrier and then to the upper rack at what ever height you choose
\
C and U Slotted Perforated Galvanized Shaped Steel Profile Strut Channel - China Construction Steel, Galvanized Steel Profile
you can then make jerry can brackets on both sides of tire and spring nut them to the unistrut at any levlel or height

It's funny that you mention jerry cans and jacks, Ace started offering add on mounts for both, you just can't do both at once...I like the idea of the above holder, but with their being such a range of tire sizes it could be tricky making one that is adjustable enough...

Trust that I muddled through all of your posts before quoting and selecting this piece to pair with my response.
It's not 100% quality control but rather they aren't doing the same R&D that a larger group can do. That's why you saw TF send folks the gen2 tire carrier and simply ask for pictures of the original cut into pieces. The manufacturers don't have the time to put it through 100% of the testing that we do otherwise they'd never be able to get a product out.
And let's not forget that there is always room for improvement in all designs.
