4.56 will bring you back to 'stock'.
4.88 will be a bit better, while still having decent freeways rpm's, and will work for 37's.
5.13 will have the rpm's a bit high if you do a lot of 80+ driving, but will situate you perfectly for the 37's.

So what are your freeway habits, and do you really want to regear a second time when the 37's go on? You are talking about 37's now, so you may as well just plan on them going on...

The brand doesn't appear to matter much, as they are all coming out of the same overseas factories. Compare price and warranty and pick what you want. And if you are not installing yourself, talk to your shop to see what their policy on provided gears is. Some will not install, some will not warranty, or will provide a better warranty if they provide.


And remember that you are seeing re-gear advice for both auto's and manuals. They have different gearing needs, so note which bits of advice you are taking.

You mention that manual and auto have different needs. I have an auto, would I be better off with 5.13 with 35's? I dont do much highway driving but every once and a while I might get on.

Spend a few minutes plugging numbers into the charts posted on page1. You will see that manuals run around 500rpm higher given the same gears/tires, so in general, an auto will be geared at least one ratio deeper.


An Auto with 5.13's and 35's = roughly 2380 rpm @ 70mph
For a Manual with 5.13's, you would need to run 43" tires to get the same rpm.

That is just the straight rpm numbers, you still have to factor in the HP and auto tranny slippage and whatever else.


And the transmission ratios just for the heck of it:

42RLE—Automatic, Four-Speed Overdrive
Gear Ratios 1st 2.84
Gear Ratios 2nd 1.57
Gear Ratios 3rd 1.0
Gear Ratios 4th 0.69
Gear Ratios Reverse 2.21

NSG 370—Manual, Six-Speed Overdrive

Gear Ratios 2nd 2.61

To the original poster: I plan on upgrading my gears down the road but Its alot of coin that I'm spending on other parts. How bad was acceleration with 35"s and 3.73 on your 6sp? I'm ordering a 2.5" lift and some 35"s but it probably will be a year before I get around to regearing.

Is it bearable?

I found any driving under 40 mph is bearable with 3.73 and 35. Anything over 40mph is terrible.

IMHO, with a JKU, stock 4:10's, KM2 35's, AUTO and a tune of 87\tow, I was pleasantly surprised.

My JKU is being regeared this week, so we'll see how that goes
