Bumper clearance
I noticed on the PureJeep bumper they say it will clear a 35" tire. That is actually one of the reasons I was curious aboot the carrier. If the bumper clears it, do I need an aftermarket carrier?
I completely understand what you are saying JeepYak. I can see where you would take the weight off the door if it's resting on the bumper. I wonder if you could install some kind of block or something that does just that, support the tire and gate when it's in the closed position? Interesting thought.
In general I'm beginning to see that the carriers help prevent long (short?) term damage to the back tailgate unless you can work an alternative method of supporting the heavier aftermarket tires.

P.S. How much do some of the bigger tires weigh? Just curious.

Tire Weight
My 33x12.50R15 Dunlop Mud Rovers weighed about 50 lbs, without rim.
My 34x10.5x15 Swamper LTB TSLs weighed about 65 lbs, I think, without rim. The 4.0 could definitely tell the difference!
I was running AR OutlawIIs, which weigh almost nothing, so rim weight really wasn't an issue for me.
