Tires?
Bigger tires don't bend the axles, it causes them to twist more as torque is applied via the gears. That is why you hear about the number of splines on axles. Usually more splines means more diameter and more strength, less twist, less likely to break.
My dream setup if I had the money would be the dana 60s already cut and preped for the jk I think called rockcrawler axles. With those axles and an engine swap you would have a super trail rig that would go anywhere with no worries of breakage. A little less money would get a 60 rear and 44 front and be almost as good. Of course you would have lockers in both ends. ARB or electric would be best if you do any wheeling in the snow.

That sounds like a good choice. Here is a club that I think you would like to be a member of. They host the Jeep Jamboree in the Palo Duro Canyon each year and also the challenge run that just happened last month. Jeepexclusive.net The members have lots of experience and can probably give you a lot of great information and take you on some great trails.

East of the state park on a private ranch is where they have the run. The club has to follow very strict rules for access to the place. Mentioned it since I saw that your location says that you are there. Wish we had something nice like that around here.
