The jack stands are what I use for all my work and are great. The torque wrenches from Harbor Freight are junk. I had two of them and they were off by a lot. Bought a couple Craftsman ones and they are more accurate and feel much better while using. Albeit, more expensive, but you can catch them on sale.

Do you think I'll need an impact wrench.

You can get a beam style torque wrench for under $20. These are less susceptible to going out of spec than the mechanical ones. Basically its just a metal bar with an indicator arrow on it. The tradeoff is they're a little harder to use, but its not that big of deal. For this application it's more than adequate.

... and no, you don't need an impact. Now whether or not you want an impact is another thing

Opinions please.

I've got time. I want decent gear, want to be safe while being reasonable in my budget.
I bought the 3-ton rapid pump hydraulic jack from Harbor Freight and returned it two days later.

I do have those jack stands and they are stout.

BoxerJoe.

What was the issue with the jack or just personal preference? Thanks for the info. I'm learning. My brain is a virtual 50 year old sponge.

I'm thinking it was a hydraulic issue. After assembly, I primed it (purged air from the hydraulic pump). It wouldn't lift. I topped off the hydraulic fluid. It would only lift six inches and the peter out. I primed it again and still couldn't get more than six inches of rise from it. I returned it. For the $90 sale price, I expected more. I went to a local auto parts store and bought a 2 1/2 ton hydraulic jack that was on sale for $40, it works perfectly.
