WHat the hell do you all do
I'm very fortunate to have a great job, but soooooo lucky that our local Fortune 500 oil company pays the college tuition for all the high school graduates in town. That'll save me ~70-80K in college costs. Not unlike hitting the lottery.
Short of your moving to El Dorado, buying parts from lesser known manufacturers can save money. Both my rock sliders and bumper are made in the USA, are of equal quality to the big name brands, but only slightly more expensive than most made in China equivalents. Still need to line up a lift, but that'll take a few more months to figure out exactly what I want. Research and proceed slowly. Buy right and buy once. Watch for others selling their mistakes.
Good luck.

Work hard in the same factory for 28 yrs. Work your way up the ladder. For me that meant becoming a bottle maker in a glass factory. (Union wages help)
Figure out exactly what you want (at least a starting point before mods), take care of it, make the payments, soon you have a nice vehicle the way you want it paid off.
In 98, got a new Harley, customized it, paid it off. Still the only bike I want.
In 04, it was a new Z71. Now paid off.
Couple of used Jeeps here and there, and in 2012, the new JK. Slowly getting mods, and in 3 years it'll be free and clear.

Retired since the age of 50 (turn 65 in a few weeks). Was always frugal with my money and got to the point where all bills were paid off--no mortgage in 18 years, no car payment in over 30. If you keep a car for 10 years, and meanwhile make "car payments" into an investment account, time and the markets will reward you, too. All of my kids are out of the house, three with great jobs (one preparing to retire from Air Force next year). The last one is pursuing her doctorate in physics at Rice in a paid position (as is typical for grad students in hard sciences)--so all done paying college bills. On top of that, my Jeep did not happen over night. It is still a work in progress after 7-1/2 years of ownership, with no end in sight.

My best advice to anyone who would like to duplicate my success: Live beneath your means, invest for the long term.

and as mark said, spend less then you make. I live off of 40% of my after tax income, this leaves 60% for whatever. I am not rich, I dont even make alot of money, but I dont waste any of it either.
