Winch question
Jeep lists the weight of a JKU Rubi at 4340 lbs. x 1.5= 6510lbs. If your Jeep is hevily loaded or outfitted with heavy bumpers and armor it would obviously weigh more. I'd imagine mine is less with no doors, top, carpet, etc. Dave over at Northridge said 8,000 was plenty for a JKU.
Look at the weight on the label on the inside of your door jam. JKU's are over 5000lbs GVW...
You take the GVW and subtract the curb weight to get the weight you can safely carry. A JKU with a hard top and doors (auto) has a curb weight of ~4,550LBS. A 2-dr is ~3,800.
I always understood the rule of thumb was 150% of vehicle weight. If JK is 3800, then 8k should be great and okay for JKU, although 10k would be better.
Specs on my 8000lb Smittybilt are exactly the same as the 10000lb model - except the synthetic rope.

I don't think this is accurate. I have stalled a 10500 lb winch just in mud, of course it was only 30 feet out. When pulled out to the first couple of raps then I got out ok. A heavier duty winch you will not be pulling all the cable out every time you winch, and you will have the power when you really need it. Depends on your normal situation, extra capacity and not pulling all the cable out every time doesn't qualify as overkill in my book.

Still no Snatch block pic

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Td92wGxvujU It's just a pulley. Increases your mechanical advantage so your winch doesn't have to work as hard (or so you can move objects normally too heavy or too stuck for your winch to move). You could also use them to change your recovery angle.

Tough Stuff makes some great Jeep products. To the best of my knowledge, the only winch-related item they make is their safety thimble, which I have and love. They also make a hood-mounted Hi-Lift/shovel-axe mount: Ditto on that loving feeling. Personally, I would not patronize a business that steals the name of a good one by playing with the spelling.

As for winches, the important things are how much pulling force is required (if in mud or sand, a lot more than the weight of the Jeep), and how many line wraps are paid out. You'll lose about 40% of your pulling force if you're on the outermost wrap of a winch spool. You can make up for this by use of a snatch block.
