The "Trails and Waypoints" sticky discussion thread
If you're looking for waypoints for entire trails (not just trailheads), there is a relatively new (and free) site that I've been using at travelbygps.com. The user interface for locating the correct databases isn't the greatest, but if you do a search for "California" there is a set for the Rubicon trail, and databases for ABDSP and Death Valley that each have waypoints for several trails.
Lot of hiking/biking/driving (onroad) trails at that site too, you have to weed through it.

Travelbygps is an awesome resource. We hope ours will be more of a POI database that Jeepers (specifically JKers) can load up from a single file and use for reference when they're out wheelin. Hopefully, there will be some peace in knowing that a fellow forum member actually marked the waypoint themselves-- and we can keep better track of what has closed, changed or needs updating in some way. I definitely encourage people to give us more than just trailheads (we already have a couple campsites and historical sites), but we're going to avoid getting into tracks or routes or anything like that.
Down load the way points for google earth here great site, it will give you some insight of what to expected

I looked at the database thread and the first 2 post have different formats for coordinartes. I see a problem arising....not necessarily with the format but what DATUM. There needs to be a rule to use only one Datum or at least post your Datum.
I'd hate to go and try find a trail head that someone marked using NAD27 and I am using WGS84.

We have specified that we would like to use only WGS48 datum. Woods used the right datum, just a different format. The actual .gpx file has the coordinates listed all in the same format and has been verified using google maps and other resources-- but again, use at your own risk.

Format isn't a problem. Both have advantages and disadvantages. It is a good idea to have both with you and of course maps too.

They don't expect it to reopen until December-- they said the fires and mudslides just ravaged it.
