Alpha Expedition: Gobi Roof Rack.
Awesome! Never thought of doing that. Would work out better than a strap in the way.
)All joking aside, the platform is quite stable, but you will obviously get some motion from the vehicle suspension, so it's not 100% rock solid. I haven't set the tripod up there, but I obviously use a roof top tent (two people + 150 lbs. for the tent). I have set a camp chair up there just to hang out for a better view, no problems there either.
I would definitely say get the front insert panel if you're planning on using it for photography and have gear you need to store, since the platform without the panel would probably be a little tight.
Here are some finely-crafted photographs that resulted from the above:

WOW thanks for the rapid respose and the pic's!!! Definatly answers my question. Hoping for some great Death Vally blooms the spring. Again thanks. Roy

It's not a trivial thing to put a really informative video together. Just in terms of setting expectations, you will probably have to wait a few more weeks or longer for us to shoot one for you.
EDIT: Sorry, it looks like one one ever actually said that (when it gets warmer we'll take it) -- but I was thinking it, I swear! (In any case, the disclaimer on lead time for the videos still stands)

Looks like a FUN time, start or finish of a run.
