My local Sears Auto charges $11 if I bring the oil. I used to change my own, but the disposal hassle isn't worth the $11 savings.

I use synthetic (Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum) and change every 5,000 miles. I just can't see taking chances with your oil.

 

Back when I started driving many years ago, my dad said "Oil is cheap compared to engine repair". He was a mechanic for 35 years. I change my oil every 2000 to 3000 miles. Cheap insurance.

 

Generally, automakers recommend every 3K miles for heavy duty use and every 5K miles for regular duty use. I would consider any off-roading , dirt road use, or driving around town with stop and go traffic as heavy duty (they usually list what kicks you up to heavy duty use) and highway use is regular duty. Currently I am just driving on the highway so I change every 5K miles with a blended oil.

I think for true comparison we would need to see pictures of an engine after 36 oil changes at 3,000 mile intervals. (and take out the anti-freeze variable)

 

I have mine done every 5K and at the most 8K.
Reason I have it done is Im gettin too old to crawl around under the Jeep and hate the disposal hassle as well.
Just dont feel comfortable going mush more than that.
Maybe Im being a little anal about it.

 

Couldn't have said it better. Just like quality time with family or significant other, the jeep needs attention too. Definitely more attention than a five thousand mile interval can provide.

 

mileage is a terrible indicator of oil life

(this is now officially my mantra, I wake up every night screaming it)


If you drive 500 easy highway miles per day for about a month chances are your oil will be OK after that 10k miles. (but your hemorrhoids will be brutal)

If you drive 2 miles per day for 6 months (~ 350-400 miles) I'd bet your oil was exhausted.

Folks have to be realistic about their driving style (as mentioned above) and oil changes are cheap insurance (also mentioned above).

3k may be right for some, 5-6k for others, and even 10k if duty cycles allow for it.

we all use the rigs differently, after all, that's why some folks OCI goes off after 2k and others never see it.

 

I change every 5,000KM thats "3,106.856 Miles" or sooner like every mechanic says oil is cheap compared to a new engine!!!

I change the oil when ever the change oil light and chime comes on. Is not the JK equiped with an oil condition sensor. My interval changes with the type of driving I've been doing.

I use full syn also.

 

JK MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE:

Change your engine oil more often if you drive your
vehicle off-road for an extended period of time.
² Under no circumstances should oil change intervals
exceed 6,000 miles (10,000 km) or 6 months, whichever
comes first.
Your dealer will reset the oil change indicator message
after completing the scheduled oil change. If this scheduled
oil change is performed by someone other than your
dealer the message can be reset by referring to the steps
described under “Oil Change Required” in “Odometer/
Trip Odometer” in the “Instrument Cluster Description”
section of this manual.
