I'm always skeptical when I see photos like that--what else has that engine been through that led to this? Why does Mobil 1 recommend 15K miles/once a year for their extended life oil? What is it that posters of such photos know that the engineers at Mobil don't?

Well, my own experience: Have changed engine oil once per year/12K miles (now 15K miles if needed) since the early 70s on all of my vehicles. Reason? I'm cheap and lazy. And it doesn't make sense to waste our planet's precious resources (both in consumption and disposal). My son's pick-up now has 160K miles with such oil changes (always Mobil 1), and it runs just fine.

BTW: With the Jeep I've modified my oil change schedule, and will change it after making a run in dusty conditions if it has 5K miles.

This went on for about 40K miles. Started to do a filter change a 5K and added 1qt for the next 40K. Since a buddy was an Amsoil distributer, I switched to Amsoil. He's a motor head and has a couple vehicles he does a 10K change on with ansoil and has had no problems. If he does this with a 70 Himi Cuda, and a 69 396 Camaro, I feel comfortable with the Jeeps. My current oil maintenance is, for the 94XJ 5K. New oil filter and 1 qt Amsoil 10/30 full synthetic. 5K later a full oil change and filter. The JK currently has 186K and no problems.
Now for the wifes 07 JK Unlimited, I've changed the oil at 3K and went Mobil1 (5/20) with Mobil1 filter every 3K miles. Have recently switched to Amsoil 5/20 full synthetic and a NAPA Gold filter, and am going with a new filter at 3K and adding 1qt. 3K later a full change, however next year I'm thinking about increasing this to 5K intervals. Her JK sees little if any off-road. Of course, once a week I check the oil in both vehicles, and have yet seen any problems.
Damn, 186K on your JK and no problems!

Dude that Amsoil stuff is amazing. 10k is waaaaay too soon for an oil change IMO. That stuff's expensive for a reason; it's used on air craft and is of the highest quality. My friend used to sell it, and he'd change his every 25k miles on his BMW and he'd motocross it and beat the crap out of it and the oil was always clean. He WOULD change the filters every 10k though. Amsoil is superb.

Fwiw, I have changed the oil in all of my vehicles at 8k for last 8 years with no issues. That includes a turbo Audi a4, 08 tundra, 2001 tahoe, 1999 suburban, 95 civic, 08 altima, and two 09 JKs.

We have to consider the ramifications of frequent oil changes on our environment. How does everyone here dispose of or recycle their used oil?

I use synthetic oil because it does not tax our natural resources (as much) and allows me to go much longer between oil changes. I go 6-8000 between changes. I heck it frequently invade some is burnt off and the level gets low.

Changing oil every 3000 miles creates enormous oil waste which is otherwise not recyclable or destroyable and will one day effect our grand children's environment.

As jeepers who spend lots of time within our natural environment this is something we should all consider.

Thanks for letting me day my peace.
