Question 2009 JK using oil

I have only 12000 miles on my Rubicon and I noticed it getting loud between oil changes. I have 4000 since my last change and when I checked the oil this morning it was very low. I will go at lunch and add oil, just to see how low it is, but this does not sound normal to me. Any suggestions or comments?

Do you drive it hard or with the OD off a lot? This can increase the oil burn. Also how many times have you checked your oil since the last change? I usually use about 1 quart of oil between changes at 6000 mile intervals.

Seems to be a common problem with the 3.8 motor. Mine uses a quart every 1,500 miles.

Default oil usage

I beleive you will see more oil loss by lugging the motor than by higher rpms. If you are trying to use as high a gear as possible or overdrive in an attempt to get better fuel milage this is not entierly true. By letting the motor spin up some you will probably see better fuel economy and less oil loss. The Jeep has an automotive motor to drive on streets and highways and ocasionaly off road not a tractor motor to go plow the back 40 with.

It is not normal for a brand new 3.8l to burn oil.
Mine hasn't ever burnt a drop of oil and the lvl is always unchanged between oil changes.

Do not know if theirs any truth behind what TRJeff mentioned in his post but for what it's worth...
I am one of the ones who will down shift to rev my engine up rather then let it bogg down if that tells you anything.

My JK uses about a half a quart between oil changes now.

I also let the engine rev a little. Around town, O/D is off, which keeps it at a better rpm.

It was about a 1.5 qts low. I have the 6 speed manual, so I will have to pay attention to my driving habits more. I do occasionally have it in too high a gear in traffic, so the lugging may be the culprit.

Thanks for all the responses.
