Default 2nd gear crunch.

Hi,

I have around 5000 miles on my 2010 Unlimited Rubi. The issue I am having is that every once in a while when shifting from 1st to second I what I can describe as a crunch noise as the shifter enters second gear. (it never happens when I down shift)
As this happens randomly the dealership claims they can't replicate it. It has been like this since I got the Jeep and I tried the following:
1. Pulling the shifter further in.
2. Keeping the RPMs high/low
3. Slow/fast shifting
None of these prevented the issue.
For the record I have been driving stick for 20 years and this is my third manual Jeep. (YJ and TJ)
Is this Normal? It doesn't feel right and takes the joy of driving the jeep around town.

on a side note, the mechanic at the dealership laughed when I told him it would be nice to build up the jeep and give it to my son in 14 years. He asked me if I truly expect the Jeep to last that long.

Help please.

i would slap the $%^& out of the stealership guy... apparently he doesn't know much about jeeps in general.

to stay on subject: i notice a grind when i shift into second and put too much pressure on it (pulling it further in).
i'm sure you have noticed, but the stick in the neutral position resides below 3rd and above 4th. maybe you are
shifting it at a funny angle when you pull it left and back for second?
possibly readjust your seat or grip the shifter differently.
(wouldn't hurt to try)

Default Not much help but here ya go.

i've had my 08 unlimited X for 2 years now, it is also a stick and i too notice a short "clunk" or "crunch" noise when shifting from first to second and sometimes going into 3rd. Also never when downshifting.

It comes from under the jeep and i can only hear it with the doors off or windows down. I haven't talked to the dealer about it yet but I think its just the normal sound of the clutch engaging.

On that note, the Jeep has been running like new since i got it 2+ years ago.

Hope this at least relieves some stress for at least 2 years

i have had the exact issues since i first got my 08' Rubi. My buddies Sahara shifts silky smooth compared to my Rubi. The "feel" doesn't bother me as much as i feel like there is damage done on each shift?

yup, common, I believe it's just a character flaw of this transmission...I don't know why or what causes it, it's been discussed plenty here...I live with it and have all but forgotten about it, it has not caused any other issues, it has not failed and my transmission hasn't exploded yet...some are gonna swear they dont have the issue...whatever. As for do I believe a JK could be around in 14 years? Absolutely I do. With proper maintenance any vehicle can last that long and longer.

Yeah, a lot of them including mine crunch, particularly when cold in Autumn/winter; feels like the gearbox on a 20yr old clunker with 300k miles on the clock. My dealer offered to replace the synchro set so I'll prob take him up on the offer before the warranty expires. I just shift slowly into 2nd to avoid it.

I had a feeling it might be the synchro. I mentioned it to the dealer. I am going to try another dealership. At least it sounds like it shouldn't break anything.

My 09 unlimited X did the same thing, and then later, the first gear started popping out upon taking off from stops. I took it to the dealership and they blew me off until the synchro's from 1st to 2nd went bad and then they replaced it under warranty. This on the other hand took them 5 days to accomplish and they would not do it until it popped out of gear with them in the vehicle.

Same issue on my 08, told dealership and they ask if it bothered me that much and I said "your going to fix it whenever you want". They elected to let it ride, so I make sure I baby it with the hardest force I can apply each and every time it happens. They will replace it and the rest of them with it for the reply they gave.
