Never having a 2012, I will admit I don't know everything, but having encountered the dreaded 4wd light left on, I was forced to have the switch replace, thus how I reached my conclusion. In other words, if you have a solution, then why find fault in my comments when you clearly could have informed the Oper the "correct" answer and avoided my comment all together.

With ronjenx... I'm betting the problem is with your transfer case linkage. If, as ronjenx said, the shifter feels loose, then this might be of use to you.

If it isn't the linkage then it can be the switch on the top of the case. Trail Badger has no idea what he's talking about, ignite the post. The 4wd switch sits on top of the tcase and is just a threaded switch. There's a single connector on top and it threads out. Advance auto had one when I replaced it on my TJ (same spot and style of switch).

Karl - looking back at some threads like this one, it's so obvious. I can't believe I didn't put two and two together sooner.

My guess, as others have said, is the Transfer Case switch located on the top of the case and has 2 wires and a plug going to it. Bit of a bitch to get at but if it were me I would drop the rear cross member a bit (2 ") with a couple of mechanical scissor jacks. It unscrews with a wrench unsure of size though. Be careful and don't drop the cross member and tranny and TCase etc. Passenger side won't drop much as it has the tank skid plate attached but driver side should give you the needed clearance.
